Bike Mechanic?
Park Tools puts on classes from time to time. I have a friend who attended one and they basically disassembled, overhauled, and rebuilt their bikes.
I have found some books to be helpful -- Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance is very good. Park Tools has a book that many people recommend (I don't own it). The tech info on the Park Tools website is very helpful.
search around locally...we have a bike coop that does a class where you break down your bike to a pile of pieces and then put it back together again. (personally, I'm a little scared to do that to a nice bike, but the process sounds immensely instructive!). i know most of the bike shops around here have little master classes on various bike care topics. there may even be a community college that offers such a class...

We've got this at my LBS, its a good way to learn. I second the Park tools site, and Zinn's Art of Road (there is a new Tri bike one out, too) Bike Maintenance.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
Get an old bike and play with it. Strip and rebuild. Actual hands on is the best. Don't be afraid, it's not rocket science.

I want to learn how to work on my bike and even build up a new one on my own. Im tired of bringing it to the shop all the time. I was wondering where people learn these skills. Ive looked at books but most of them are not that helpful. Are there clinics or something that people go to?
