I just purchased a nice used road bike. I had some aero bars & clip pedals ( is that what you call it) put on. I also got a pair of shoes for the clip pedals. I was so excited. I had all the confidence in the world that I was going to take of into the sunset.......however, my inexperience proved itself when I hit the pavement. Oh Lord talk about a real awaking. I just want to know if falling is a given to amatuers or if I am totally alone in this. If I'm not alone can I get some tips on how to conquer "the bike beast"

Thanx,
Nicole

Did you fall because you fogot to clip out? Turn too sharply on soft or wet ground? Or something else?

Hey vanjames

Well actually I didn't realize that the guy @ the bike shop added a piece to the bottom of my shoe which changed the shape I had in my mind to clip into the pedal. Make sense?? So while I was focusing on getting my left foot clipped in by pushing straight into the pedal I didn't know the piece he put on my shoe required me to push in then snap down. phew......so while I was concentrating on clipping in my left foot I turned to sharply & couldn't clip out fast enough. Then while practing again yesterday I fell 3 more times. Finally I realized I have to clip in my right foot then my left foot clips in with my natural body movements after I have taken off. I am really intimated but still hopeful that I will one day soon get this down, just not down on my ass....that hurts & leaves bruises:}

Everyone has a story about falling as they get used to clipless pedals. Mine involved a stoplight and my college PE class. You'll get used to them. Just keep riding and you'll be fine.

Happens all the time. I had the "benefit" of learning how to use clipless pedals on a mountain bike, so most of my falls were on dirt trails (and a few rocks) rather than on the road.

Best advice I've heard: 1. If you can, practice clipping in and out with your bike mounted on a trainer. 2. When you're approaching a stop, clip out with the foot that you normally put down at a stop very early--most people fall because they lose too much momentum at stops before trying to clip out, and then tip their bike over while going 2MPH.

clip out early when you're learning...especially on streets with any traffic

also, when starting up again at a light or stop sign, don't worry about clipping in until you are through the intersection...it's usually a little easier to unconciously clip in while you're spinning in your normal motion anyway

I found that for me I would clip one foot in(for me its left) and then pedal away, the right takes care of itself pretty fast. As previously mentioned we all have had our spills with clipless when first using and spills still happen, watch your climbs, if you're not in the right gear on a steep climb its tough to clip out withuot falling if your about to stall. :)

I really appreciate everyone's help. I am glad to hear this is pretty run of the mill. I'll just keep trucking away!!:cool:

There are those who have fallen, and those who just haven't fallen yet.

my first ride with clipless pedals ended with me pulling up to a stop sign and panicking because I couldnt get a foot on the ground. I ended up swerving and falling in the grass at about 2 mph with both feet firmly on the pedals.

yeah everyone eats it. Lesson learned first ride with clipless pedals don't go on a very hilly road with lots of stops or your knees will hurt very quickly! As a small tip when your almost stopped turn the wheel towards the side you have unclipped the bike almost falls over, but you've unclipped so your ready =)
