Ok! This may be a really crazy question ...but....what is the difference b/w a trisuit & a wetsuit? I am doing a sprint tri in May in Panama City Beach (probably hot weather & water). I am slow as a dead mouse when in transition so I am trying to get faster & more efficient.

Next question...I had a baby 4 months ago & I was out of commission due to horrible morning sickness for most of my pregnancy. So I am out of shape is really what I'm trying to say....exactly how much busting ass do I have to do to complete successfully a sprint tri? It is May 19th..

Thanx,
Nicole

trisuit is a swim suit w/ a small cushion in the seat so you can ride a bike and run with feeling like you're wearing a soggy diaper.

a wetsuit is made of neoprene and is for swimmng only. it helps keep you warm and provides additional bouyancy (especially to the legs)

don't know can you do the swim distance? if you can you're in good shape you can always coast on the bike or walk on the run. it's hard to fake the swim.

proud and high or low and humble - many miles before I go

I can swim...but I pray nerves won't get the better of me.
So do you suggest a trisuit? If not what would you wear?

It will depend on the water temp on the day of the race... if it is warm enough wetsuits won't be allowed. The race info page should have info on this for you, or contact the race people and ask, or find someone on here who knows that race/area...

If wetsuits aren't allowed, you could do a trisuit or just trishorts and a tritop if you don't like the one-piece deal. If a wetsuit is allowed, you'll still want a trisuit or trishorts/tritop under it.

Try to get in an open water swim or 2 with some friends or a local tri club before race day, that should help the jitters and make you a little more comfortable in the water.

The bike and run shouldn't be a problem, make your own pace and have some fun.

Good luck.

ALSO, be careful - there is a difference between a surfing/divign wetsuit and a triathlon wetsuit! Tri wetsuits are much thinner in the shoulders and body and built to allow you to swim - surfing wetsuits are NOT. That being said, you could do a tri in a surfing wetsuit as it appears that you are more concerned with participating/finishing rather than placing. However, if you are going to buy one, make sure you are getting a tri wetsuit (quintana roo, orca, blue seventy, zoot, aquaman, etc...) they all are pretty good, but have different fits - so try several on. Good luck!

Something else to consider when first getting into tris, wetsuit rental. Wetsuits are one of the larger costs you can put off while you're still getting your feet.

I rented for my first race, decided I was crazy enough to continue with the sport and opted to buy the suit I rented, at a discount. The suit was an Xterra Pro, lightly raced and fit perfectly.

The suit may not be a perfect fit for you, they all vary, but it'll be good enough to get you thru your first race while you save some extra rupees for that perfect suit.

This isn't the only resource, alot of local and online tri shoppes also rent, check around.

Another reason for postponing the wetsuit purchase is weight/size loss. As you get back in shape you will no doubt loose weight and size. If you purchase a wet suit now you risk that it may not fit later once you're at your race weight.

Whoa- did you say you had a baby 4 months ago?? I ain't no doctor but I do know that when your child was born your bones
softened so you could give birth. I also know that your bones take
a considerable period of time before they return to their original density. If I were a woman and just had a child I would investigate the wisdom of doing much weight bearing training and would consult with my doc to discuss this issue.

there's many studies and articles in running magazines which say that running while pregnant (unless morning sickness takes over) and running after birth are fine.
From what I can tell Keegie poops isn't trying to win the race, she just wants a goal to attain to to help get her back into shape.

Keegie poops - My first tri I just wore a bathing suit (with an extra crop top underneath for support) and put a running singlet over the top for the ride/run. Unless you're trying to get a good time etc there's no need to go out and buy a whole heaps of expensive gear as you may not like tri's and decide to stop after one!
It's not very likely as this is a very addictive sport.. but you never know..
If there's another tri in your area that happens before yours, go down and have a look to see what everyone does/wears
