Tri short opinion thread

so i'm into my second season of triathlon-ing and im needing some new tri shorts.

i searched for a while but couldnt find a definitive thread that focused on tri shorts only.
and since i never wear any sort of top when i race, shorts are my only focus.

if everyone could just comment on their experiences with their tri shorts it'd really help me out!!!

my experiences:
the first pair i ever wore was Zoot 6" regular tri shorts w/ padding. they lasted me pretty much the whole season until i bought a new pair for my half iron.
the new pair was DeSoto's 2006 low cut tri shorts. i thought that the Zoot's were crappy since they only lasted about 5 months. and when i got the DeSoto's i thought they were awesome. but out of nowhere the DeSoto's started becoming see-thru in the legs, crotch, rear end and the stitching broke all around the padding. this was only 2 months after i bought them!!! and the problem went from little stretched out sections to huge areas of the shorts in the span of only a week or so.
now, when i cycle you can see my rear-end thru the back and its pretty much embarassing to swim in public with them on.

so im looking for a good QUALITY brand of tri shorts that can last a good while thru the rigors of trainging and racing.

i've been eyeing a few pairs of new shorts to possibly purchase:
- the Louis Garneau Men's Comp Solid Shorts cause they look like they're made of higher quality. http://www.trisports.com/logamecososh1.html

- De Soto Men's Vuelo Low Cut Tri Short because it seems that they're made of a new material this year http://www.trisports.com/desomevulowc.html

- Zoot Men’s TRIfit 4” Shorts b/c my first pair of Zoot's were pretty good. http://www.trisports.com/zometr4sh.html

any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

If you are wearing em in the pool and riding very frequently, done expect tri shorts to last too long. They are made lighter weight for racing.
I started racing in 2004, and bought a pair of Pearl Izumi shorts. Wore the only in races, and am just retiring them this year. Will be getting another pair for sure. I got a pair of Desoto shorts on clearance than I will be using for training on brick days only. I use swim specific shorts for the pool and bike shorts for bike days (unless I am bricking, and even then... if its a long ride, I normally wear bike shorts than quick change into running shorts.)

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

I sorta with triguy...I use my tri shorts for tri's...for training I swim in a suit suit, bike in bike shorts and run in em too or switch to running shorts...had the same experience as you with tri shorts. Was going through them like a hot knife through butter... now only for races and in training a few times to make sure they work ok..

I was lucky to meet Emilio DeSoto this weekend... and I must say I can't wait to try out my new shorts! They have now designed all their own fabrics, and have made the parts that were getting thin too fast (like along the rear and right on the front panel) thicker and more durable.

He is very behind his products... perhaps send off an email to him and the company and ask if that is expected behavior. Maybe you got a bad pair. Although at the same time, it does depend how much you were swimming in them since that is HARD on materials.

I use DeSoto shorts and love them. In fact I now have three pairs of them (one pair is from 2005, the other two from 2006). I do not swim in the pool with them on, but otherwise I wore them for almost all my rides (training and racing) last year and didn't have any problems with them.

I have heard good things about DeSoto standing behind their products also.

The other suggestion I have is to make sure you launder them properly. I always wash the shorts on a gentle cycle and then air dry them. Have you been throwing the shorts in the dryer? I think that will also lead to a premature death.

Ditto on a no-no in the dryer. That kills fabrics. I air dry all of my cycling and tri gear.

I have a pair of Sugoi piston's they fit me really well, are super smooth in the pool / on the bike and have good leg compression with a comfortable chamois. Our multisport club buys Louis Garneau (sharks I think) and everyone seems pleased with them. I was late ordering and had to settle for the LG cycle shorts they're really nice too but not as much leg compression for me as the Sugoi's.

If you can, try a few pairs and see which ones fit your frame the best. I found that some really good (and expensive) tri shorts just didn't fit me well.

Hello to all,

I am planning to do a 1/8 tri or olympic next year. Now i have a question about tri short

- what makes a tri short a tri short and what's the difference with a running short?
- do all tri shorts have a tri pad? is the tri pad replacable??

regards,

I have the Zoot 8" shorts and am very pleased with them.

The Zoot shorts for sure say on the label to not swim in chlorinated water in them.

Tri shorts look just like bike shorts, but have a much thinner pad than a bike short, and just like the bike short they are sewn into the shorts. The thinner pad dries out much faster than a full on bike chamois, but provides less protection for sensitive parts. Tri shorts also might have a little pocket(s) for putting gels, etc. in them since your jersey wont have the 3 big pockets like a bike jersey.

Running shorts are your typical baggy running shorts

@fpugsley, tx for the explanation. makes it clearer.

I recon the tri pad material differs from regular bike chamois?
