first real tri bike...
Last race I did I caught up to this guy riding like the full carbon Kuota with a zipp disc in the back and some hed trispoke on the front. Well I caught up to him at like mile 11 and over took him climbing a hill on my cervelo dual. So nice bikes don't mean you are fast. If its a good deal and you can afford it then get it!!!!! Don't let your thoughts of what other people will think keep you from a sweet bike.
Just get the P3....who cares, you can grow into it! ;p

"Its an addiction"
90% of triathletes ride a bike that is "more" than they need. Just get what you want, enjoy the bike, and flip the bird to anyone who wants to make fun of you for what you are riding!
Good luck at the IM and ride strong!

That P3 would be hard to pass up. But getting the P2 and having money for some big upgrades could produce a sweet ride to.
Tough choice man, good luck with it.
alright all of my enabler friends... :) You've helped tip the scales a little further toward where my heart wanted to go...
Jamie, that's great advice and what I'd offer too... However, I already have a set of Hed Alps with Conti GP 4000 race tires and the Pro build has all the same components as the P3 so there's not much more to upgrade (do I sound like a junkie who's over thought ways to get his fix yet???) I'm (90% sure I'm) going to let my bike guy know I'll go with the P3 on Monday.
Thanks for you help!
Forget what everyone else might think, and get what you would like for yourself and to ride.
"Care more than others think is wise, risk more than others think is safe, dream more than others think is practical, expect more than others think is possible."
Hmm, but one could get some nice intergrated aero bars, maybe a more saero set of race wheels, or a power meter for the price difference between the P3 and the P2SL. The P3 is a nice ride, but the let over $$ from buying the P2 could go a long ways...
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
get the P2. work on the engine.
So what did you decide to get?
Who needs a man when you have a Kuota Kalibur to wrap your legs around.
OK, what about a pro fit, Physio testing and a coach. I know that P3 is nice, but imagine sitting on P2 and being the guy blowing by the guys on the more expensive rides.
And personally, I like the look of the P2 better.
So I decided in the end to go with the P2 SL with the pro groupo... It's all the same components as the P2 and P3 carbons (different carbon seat post) but around $1000 - $2000+ less respectively.
Thanks for the posts advising me to buy with my head and not be swayed by the hot Brazillian on the cover of Triathlete mag :p As a result I was able to get some cool new gear and a carbon aero bar upgrade. The pro build shaves about 300 grams off the base SL and the comfort from the carbon seat post and firmer saddle alone make up for the price difference the carbon crank and lighter more aero forks are just a bonus...
cheers!

I have a little dilemma that I hope some of you good people can help me with. I've been working with a higher end cross bike (Kona Jake the Snake) with Hed alps for my tri related stuff and am at the point where I want to go to something better. I'm planning my first full Ironman for next fall (Ironman Canada in Penticton) and want a good bike but since my bike time and 30ish kph speed is still not great IMO I don't want to look like a total poser...
I've been looking at a 2007 Cervelo P2 SL pro build which is a sweet ride in and of itself and have been fitted and quoted at about $2250 cdn. My big dilemma however, is that my bike guy has offered me a sweet price ($1000 cdn off retail) on a brand spanking new (and very juicy) 07 P3 carbon.
I can afford the carbon (sort of) but am concerned that I'll look like a goof being mid pack on a top end pro level bike. I'm sure it will be good motivation to get better quick but have little long distance (over 40 km) experience at this point. Should I buy the best and hope I get good enough to not look out of place or should I get the lower end bike until I'm comfortable enough with my half iron times and have actually finished my first full Ironman to justify the lower weight and increased aero savings? I'm a 34 yr old professional with no illusions of becoming a full pro triathlete (but I still want to be a competitive age grouper) so I guess I'm really asking more of a what would YOU do question...
cheers!
