Need some help in planning
How much hill training are you doing right now? DO you train from HR? Do as much hill traiing in and out of the saddle to see how you react.
I try to remain as aerobic as possible while on the bike, I will climb out of the saddle when its too steep to climb but try to stay as aerobic as possible. If you recover quickly from high HRs then attacking short steep climbs would probably be fine, for the longer gradual climbs I think you should be able to spin comfortably if you are doing enough hill training at a comfortable pace and HR.
Basically I train using perceived exertion, I seem to be able to judge fairly accurately how hard I'm working so tend to stick with that.
With regards to hill training, The area around me is so hilly I wish ther were some flats!!!
But do you think its worth gunning it for the first couple of climbs then recovering at the end before the run or is that a huge mistake!?!
Its going to depend on how you recover after gunning those hills. I know for myself that if I blast hills too early my HR&PE is higher at all speeds thereafter, hence I prefer a steady effort rather than spiking it., but thats what works for me. If you train that way and it works don't change it.
It looks like a great race. Remember to grab the bidons wiht water and electrolyte, not wine when racing though :)
Thanks mate, think your right, probably best take produce a steady effort on the climbs....
Hopefully I'll be sampling the French wines that evening!!

Hi guys,
Just wondered if some one could give me their thoughts on the bike route for ironman france. The profile for the course is here:
http://www.ironmanfrance.com/fr.html
With this being only my second ironman I still don't really know how to pace or plan properly yet, but having seen this course my initial plan was to beast the first half with the major climbs in it then pretty much free ride home!! Looking at the gradients that could be possible for the last 40K almost..... but maybe I'm way off and should take the climbs easy and then power home in the last 40K!!
No idea what to do, so help would be much appreciated
Tim
