…is what I heard in the middle of my first set of 2×1500 meters this morning. I had started the swim in a lane by myself, and there were other free lanes at the time. But apparently a woman decided to join my lane and came swimming right at me when she stopped to yell at me. With that kind of attitude, I imagined her to be an excellent swimmer. I kept swimming and waited for her at the end of the pool, waved her to stop, and said, “I have no problem sharing a lane, but you really should have waited til I came back around before you started.” She replied, “I didn’t want to wait.” …because waiting 60 seconds would have thrown off your whole day is what I thought. She then said, “Its really busy here, and we should be circle swimming anyway.” I replied, “Yeah, I’m here all the time, I know what its like.” She asked if I wanted to circle swim or split the lane to which I replied, “We’d better split so I don’t get in your way.”

Unfortunately her negative energy threw off my good karma and I was pissed. I don’t fuel my workouts with anger like some people, but instead use a workout to be calm and meditative. She ruined that…well, initially, but because I am the boss of my feelings, I tried to sing in my head and rearrange my thoughts back to a more positive place. I ended up with a good swim, fighting curse words some of the time and thinking of more positive things too. I’m not a fast swimmer by any means, but I ended up swimming circles around her (well, not literally, because we were splitting the lane :D ). I realized the reason that she saw me coming earlier was because she was freestyle swimming with her head out of the water, and going nowhere fast. Ahh people.

That's weird usually the real pain in the blank swimmers are the elitist wicked fast swimmers. Maybe she was just insecure with the free flopping style of swim.

Ya, there sure is a lot of poor lane etiquette out there. I try and take it as a good way to practice trying to quickly refocus on the interval that I'm doing and get pass the irritation. But with some of the clueless out there it may take a lap or two!

I headbutted a lady last week. She just appeared in my lane too! She was a bit more apologetic than yours though.

Personally, I always wait and ask.

My method is to stand above the lane once I am ready and wait until the person gets back to the wall again before I hop in. If I stand at the wall and the person never stops then I hop in and just sit there stationary until they swim back again so I know they see me. I figure some people don't like to stop for me to ask so I just let them know I am there before I swim.

I was cussed out by an older "gentleman" who joined my side of the lane that I was splitting with another swimmer. I just missed hitting him, good thing too since he was about 250 lbs and would have crushed me. When I told him that he should have waited until I got back to start swimming he replied (I'll leave out the cuss words) that I should have know he had joined the lane. But I'm proud of myself that I kept my mouth shut, eventhough I thought to myself, sorry I missed the announcement that you had entered the pool. Some people are just class A jerks looking for a fight and it's better to ignore them.

Good for you for not letting her ruin your workout. There are a lot of jerks out there who can't see past their own immediate needs and there is a lot of power in not letting them get to you and choosing your own attitude.

The thing that really annoys me is when your swimming and some one stops in the middle of the lane and has a conversation with some one in the other lane.....talk about annoying......

Weird i've never had a problem with other swimmers getting in the way like that... I did have an unlucky girl lane hop right in front of me during a 50m sprint set, because I look more downwards than upwards, she came out a lot worse than I did.

I swim at an athletic club so most of the swimmers I run into (pun intended) are the water aerobics people who like to walk in the swim lanes. If there's no one around, I don't mind and they're just trying to get some space for themselves.

The real a$$wipes are at the other location of the same athletic club (I swim at one location by my office and another by my home across the valley). That location caters to a younger crowd and it's mostly the dudes that do the running dive into the pool, cut you off, swim a lap before they're exhausted thrashing the water, etc.

I just need to talk my wife into letting me build an Olympic-sized pool in our backyard. ;)

This is what I do, too. I always ask before even hopping in the lane.

I myself havent run into any jerks at the Y yet, but give it time...

I used to swim with a Masters group at the public pools. Our practice was after the official closing time for the pool. The was this one guy still doing laps, and the lifeguards told him to get out. Of course he was in my lane. So I hoped in as he was arguing with the lifeguards and my coach. After one length, I was about half way back and the SOB HIT me! I stood up (tall guy, shallow end lane) and looked at the lifeguard. I think he was in just as much shock as me. So I swam to the end of the lane. Apparently while I did that, the dude had the balls to jump out and start telling the lifeguard that I assaulted him!

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

You don't need a full pool, just a lane or two courting one side of the yard ;)

Thankfully I haven't run into too much nasty behavior as of yet. I did run into a guy last night who apparently couldn't swim with his shorts pulled all the way up. I ended up finally simply closing my eyes whenever I breathed towards his lane as seeing some guy with his shorts pulled halfway down his butt isn't high on my priority or want list.

I could write a book of things like that, that are not high on my priority list. But I'm not going to start a rant, because I had two good work outs today and I'm feeling good right now.

But can't wait to be able to swim outdoors (in a month or so...).

I have had the same thing happen to me a number of times. When I swim I look straight down, I don't look forward, so I usually have an accident when someone jumps in the lane with me. They usually are poor swimmers and just don't understand proper etiquitte, so I don't get mad at them.

So I stopped by the grocery store after a ride this morning (pizza craving....whole wheat crust, part-skim cheese of course). I was still in my UF kit, which shouldn't be a problem; even though it's spandex and lycra, EVERYONE in Gainesville loves the Gators. Little kids get excited and wave...yada yada.

So I walk in and some old lady who had to be pushing 70 looks me up and down for a second, and in the best geriatric sarcasm she can muster, says, "nice outfit." I just smile and say thank you because she's old and I'd feel bad hitting her, but I'll be damned if I didn't feel like it. I really was just floored at her. Some people just like being mean for no reason.

I was that guy. early on I jumped in a lane and started swimming assuming the guy in my lane would be swimming a circle. 1 head butt later I learned to always wait and talk w/ the person before joining a lane.

so did you pee in the pool before you left?

I get rammed once in a while in the pool from whoever jumps into my lane unannounced while I'm in mid-lap. I like to think that's good practice for the washing machine action on raceday.

It does piss me off but what am I going to do? The tire iron is in the car and I don't feel like going all the way to the parking lot in my speedos just to get it you know.

what's also annoying is when there's lane speed signs up 'slow, medium, fast' and EVERY lane has slow people in it.. My pool has this little old lady that's there every morning when the pool opens at 6, she takes up a whole lane to herself and does 5 laps of backstroke to my 20 laps of freestyle.. When there's only 4 available lanes at the time, it gets very frustrating..

I take a minute or 2 to see what lane is available, who is in what lane(fast, medium, slow) and go to the lane.
I try and get the persons attention if I have to share a lane.
If I miss them the first time around I sit on the edge of the pool with my legs in the water. Once they come closer I wave my have under the water to get their attention. Usually I get it. I let them know I will be joining them in the lane. Sometimes they don't like it but they can't say I wasn't courteous.
I can say I hav gotten more than a grumble once or twice.

Pays to wait a little and be a little cautios and polite.
It has paid off in good pool karma for me so far. :D

Nothing to it, but to do it

This had never happened to me, until today. Which is really wierd because it happened after I had read this post earlier today.

It was unusually busy in the lap sections today. A guy and I had agreed to split our lane. Some lady jumped into join us and ran into me. I think our hands just hit eachother. The lady was nice about it, but right after it happened all I could think of was everyone's posts. I told her "next time, please wait for us at the wall so we know you've joined us." Be like Star, don't let the run in ruin your workout.

It's kind of shocking when it happens though. You're in midthought about your stroke or whatever else is on your mind and boom, that happens. I'm kinda glad I'd read this thread beforehand.

Well, I'm happy to see that I'm not the only one out there swimming with impulsive imps! It was good mental training and I'm sure it will happen again  My husband asked if I punched her when I swam by her. No, nor did I pee in the pool! (But I like your passive-aggressive thinking!). Nothing like a cat-fight in the pool!

I got a response on my blog that I will talk with the Y about: At the pool gate there are brochures about pool etiquette. When someone pulls a stunt like any of the above mentioned ones, you hand the person a brouchure...or put one at the end of his lane for his reading pleasure. Sounds like a good tactic to me :D

Maybe if it's universal it will carry over and kill the wind that we are supposed to have on sunday....

come on big money no whammies..... STOP :)

I think the Karma is kicking in though to be honest the wind seems like the only bad part so far...
