Advice on Nutriton During a Long Bike
I read somewhere that you should ingest 200-300 calories per hour during exercise. With practice, you should be able to bike with solid foods- energy bars, pop-tarts, fig newtons. I like to save the gels for running since it's harder to digest energy bars during runs. Good Luck and remember to race with the same foods you trained with.
Normally that would be enough for me for 50 miles, but it's different for every person. A big difference in how you perform comes from what you eat as well as how much. One of the things you chose might not work with your body. I've tried Heed before and bonked really hard on it, as did one of my friends. I know that I do much better with Gatorade, but again, it's different for every person. You'll just have to experiment to find out what works best for you.

Not fast enough.
There is alot of stuff out there that says "If you're this,do that."
It doesn't work that way. Only you, with experience can find what works for you. There is no set formula..it's sort of more like a guide line.
On training rides, of about three hours, I'll go through about three bottles of Gatorade or water, a bag of blocks and maybe three or four gels...and of course I always carry extra because sometimes I seem to need more.
It's sort of a mantra here at Trifuel....Find what works for you.

I can go 50 miles on jsut one gel and a couple bottles of Gatorade, provided I eat right before the ride. And I WILL be starving right afterwards. Luckily there is a Chik Fil A on my way home! I could carry a Cliff bar, change your drink, and maybe pack a couple more gels. You will get more efficient as you go along.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
It really depends.
Started out on an empty stomach or fueled up?
How hard you were working for your fitness level.
Hills. Wind etc.
These training rides are how you determine what works for you. It takes awhile to find the right combo of gels, water, sports drink, bars etc. as well as nailing down the pre-ride nutrition. What works for one does not mean it'll work for another. And always a good idea to carry more than you think you'll require.
So just keep riding and it'll work itself out.

Concur w/ gatorade over heed but there are seperate threads for that. I use gels myself and hqave recently started using cliff bars. I prefer power bars but they are not really a solid and will slowly morph into a "lump" I'd taken on a long ride or run - esp I'd subject to a little heat.

Ok, i am still some what new to doing long rides. The other day i rode 50 miles. It took 2hrs and 40mins. I filled my sports drink "Heed" with 200 calories worth. i also took in two gels at 100calories each. For a total ingestion of 400 calories. Is that enough? my body told me it wasn't, as i seemed to fatigue hard for the last 12 miles. Just wondering how much a 195lbs male, should be injesting during a long ride. any help would be appreciated. ty.
