Aero Wheelset
First you need to decide what kind of wheelset you need. As long as you're averaging over ~21mph, an aero wheelset will definitely help. If you can average over ~24mph (or think you will soon), you should consider a disc.
For $1000, your best bet is going to be to get a used wheelset. A new wheelset for that price, for example, might be a Ritchey Carbon (if you get a really good deal...I think retail is about $1400). They are basically brand new 10-year-old Zipp 404s (no dimples). Very good wheels, but not as good as used two-year-old 404s. Race wheels don't get a lot of miles on them, so even when you buy used, they really aren't that used.
Oh yeah, check out flashpoint, too. Zipp is their parent company. Same technology, cheaper manufacturing. I've never ridden them, but I imagine that they'd be good and I've heard that they are (not from many people, though, since they're still fairly new).

Not fast enough.
Be sure to check out ebay when buying, I picked up a pair of zipp 606s for 1200 bucks brand new. I would also look at the Bontrager Carbon X lite.
You can get a decent set on e-bay if you are patient and keep an eye out. I got a new set of Hed Jets for about $1,200 this winter from the Hed store.

Ebay or I second the Flash points...you can get a set for $1100. No tubular option though.
For $1000 you can get a front wheel of your choice: Zipp, Hed Jet 90, Hed 3, etc and a rear Disc cover. Your front wheel can run $600 and an $90 rear disc cover gets you a fast wheelset.
Never mind that over a certain speed thing. Everyone beneits from fast wheels. Even the dud chuggin along at 15 mph can benefit from nice wheels.
IMO- Zipps are nice, but over priced for what they are. You get a lot more bang for your buck from any other brand out there. And they wont slow you down any.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

I agree, Zipp just sponsor alot of pros to get their name out there. HED are great wheels, I use HED3Cs and they are bullet proof. Basically between the different MAJOR brands there is very little difference. Just get what you can cheapest. Mavic are also awesome wheels, their hubs are great and also have a bullet proof reputation, although they are a bit expensive.

In the next couple months I should have been able to scrape together about 1000 bucks that I would like to put toward an Aero Wheelset. Basically, since I really don't know too much about good brands etc of wheels and such I could really use some suggestions on a good wheelset in the $1000 range.
