Having raced around Tempe Town Lake 3 times last year, I am very familiar witht the route, but just wanted to give you all an update on conditions in general. Take a look at the IMAZ web site to see a map and the places I refer to. I did 2 laps, starting at noon under clear skies, 90 dgerees.
-The initial run east along the south shore of the lake to Rural Rd. is nice as there is gravel to run on. Gives you a chance to take a break from the concrete paths. Up and over the bridge heading north. The place where you turn west across the bridge is all under construction, so I am not sure how they will route through there.
-You turn north again, under the 202. Enjoy the shade, going undeer the 202 and the Mill Ave. bridge is ALL THE SHADE YOU'RE GOING TO GET! You twist through a small park, try and run on the grass where you can, it's cut short and the grounds hard, but not as hard as concrete.
-When you reach Curry, to climb really the only appreciable hill on the course and it's easy. Once on the top, you get a great recovery downhill as you turn south to head back towards the lake's north shore, where you follow the concrete rec path east back towards the bridge at Rural. Up and over and back all the way along the south shore, past transition.
-Once past Transition, you running due west along Rio Salado. There is a bit of an incline here that levels off about 1/4 mile from the bridge at Priest. The bridge at Priest is also on an incline and you will notice it, but once over, you turn east agin along the north shore and are back on the rec path. Not a lot of options along here, some grass, but you are pretty much stuck on the concrete. Once you pass under the railroad tressle and the light rail bridge, you do a quick loop up to Mill. There's another small uphill here. Once on Mill, heading south, it pretty flat and you either descend along transition to start another lap.....or turn the corner and finish
So, to review, it's a lot of concrete paths, so take the soft line wherever possible. It's very exposed and today was probably very similar to what it will be like on the 15th. I went through 8 6oz bottles on my FuelBelt. The sun is relentless, as always here in AZ, so bust out those visors or hats!
