I may become a race director
So SC athletes can look forward to races that take them up the absolute steepest climbs in the state and the most grueling runs?
Sounds like a blast!
Good luck!
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
Get ready for everyone in the world (at least that what it feels like) to hate you and think you do everything wrong. Have fun!

Chris, lad, you have my deepest respect for wanting to become an RD. I've never been an RD but have been in charge of a specific area (Post race picnic,an aid station) and thought THAT was a thankless job. I know several RD's and and they tell stories you wouldn't believe about how rude and inconsiderate people can be.
Good luck...without people like you,we wouldn't have a sport...
Lets us know...maybe I'll schlep down your way ...

Good Luck Chris - it's A LOT of work. We put on a 5K fundraiser for our elementary school and I was in charge (although I don't know if I'd consider myself the race director). Anyway, it was a small race and it took a lot of hours and a lot of people. There are so many details and it can be a very thankless job. The best advice I can give you, is put together a great group of volunteers and treat em right, because they are the backbone of doing something like this. Even though there were times I thought this was the worst thing I had ever gotten myself into, I did enjoy it and would do it again, but I had a great group to work with.

very true about people giving RD's a really hard time.... i for one always thank the RD ... though i've never had any real problems at a race.
anyone in central FL should feel lucky to race with Fred over at Sommer Sports... he is best in the BIZ. he puts on races that are top notch IMO.
i remember doing his sprint in 98 and there were about 300 people , now there are 1000 people at his sprints ! he also put on a ironman distance race and i was glad he never sold out to 'ironman' .. since IM moved into FL it has hurt his particiant levels but the races are still good.

He does the best races around here for sure. They're always fantastic and he manages to get some strong talent to show up, too. If you're in central Florida, go to one of his races. Never go to a Buttar race, though. Seriously, he's absolutely awful. Everyone who races here agrees....it's not just me.
