road rash / pool

quick question:

got in a small tiff with a car last week on one of my training runs - the car, of course, won (thank you oblivious memphis drivers) and i now have a couple of patches of road rash. otherwise, bike and i are in decent condition and planning to race this weekend.

only problem: race is in a pool.

i know that swimming in a public pool with open wounds is frowned upon, but this is also a race situation. please, as i'm new to the sport, let me know: is it terribly uncouth to expect to race and will people look at me as a rude person, oblivious of the rules / etiquette? or is it really not that big a deal?

(it's not like i'm in terrible shape; i've just a few patches on my thigh, shoulder, elbow and hands.)

I feel you on the Mempho drivers! Sounds like it's not that bad. I say go for it, plus with all the chlorine, it wouldn't bother me.

I actually run a health & fitness center which includes a lap pool. I would say as long as you do not have an "open wound" you should be ok. I personally would not have a problem with a member who was swimming with the injuries you described as long as they were not open and bleeding, etc.

Use common sense on this one and you should be good. It sounds like there is a week or two between your accident and the swimming so I bet you will be in fine shape to use the pool.

Good luck on your race!

I've always taken "open" wounds to be ones that are actually bleeding. If its closed up its ok.

Just be careful... I've heard that chlorine can slow healing by damaging new skin. If it's for a race that's only a week away... I don't know how much a few sessions would hurt.
