Hi runners,
I have just found a very nice 1/2 marathon race close from where I live. It is scheduled for May,5 and I am not sure if I am ready for this?
In the last weeks, my weekly mileage was less than 20 miles and my longest run 3 weeks ago was 7 miles.
Can you suggest, please, how to train to prepare myself for 1/2 marathon in 5 weeks? Is it even possible or you rather do not recommend it?
Thanks for any help.
I cant say I would recommend it. Not if you are new to running, anyway. You dont give much background information, so...
It would be possible to show up and get through the distance. Increase that long run by a mile a week. Your other running days- stay the same distance, but on one day throw in some running drills (high knees, butt kicks, skipping, strides) and make the other day a little faster.
You could prolly make the distance, but if at any point in the buildup to the event, your shins or knees hurt for more than a couple days, back off and scrub the event. Again, I would save the half mary for next year, and just focus on building up your ability to run now.
Thanks for advice.
I have started with running approx. 1/2 year ago and built up my distances up to 20miles/week and 7miles single run today. I have tried few races too, but they were only 4-5 miles, nothing long. So this is my background.
I will try to increase the long run as you suggest and will see.
Thanx
don't hurt yourself by pushing into this event...pick another with more time to safely build up.
i'm working on rebuilding my running because of a similar attempt last year
I agree with Triguy, you could do a half-mary in 5 weeks but you might end up with an injury that could set you back in the process. That being said, runnersworld has some different half marathon plans, you might check these out.

Good luck.

not looking good. have done that distance before? think it may be too much too fast. sorry.
You are going to try to almost double your longest ever run to date in 5 weeks. You might be able to do it, but the chances of you having a good experience are not high. Listen to the above advice, take your time, follow a good plan, there will be lots more 1/2's to do.
Thanks all for good advice.
I think I will build up my mileage more slowly as you suggest. The health is more important than 1 specific race. I will pick a 1/2M in the fall.
Thanks again
