5 months for HIM?
maybe. have you ever done a tri before? can you swim? how much time per week do you have to train?
there is a couple generic Half plans on this site (under training) and at trinewbies.com to give you some general ideas what typical training weeks would look like. if they look like too much effort then I'd rethink your goal.

Really depends on your fitness level. 5 months is plenty of time. Assuming that you can swim and really just need to build up your endurance. Best is to get a beginners training plan for a HIM.
Also make sure you do some runs off of the bike.

yeah! I can swim (I know the technique) but my endurance is really bad at swimming right now at this moment. Biking seems easily possible for me (I'm training doing 50km rides 2 or 3 times per week so increasing up to 90km is an easy task) and I'm currently running 5km but very slow.

I came from a cycling and swimming background so when I started training last April or May I picked back up on the swimming and biking pretty quickly after being off 15-16 years, but I didn't have much running base.
I did a HIM in September after only 5 months of training, but my training consisted of 2-3 swims/week and was up to 7-8000 yds per week and got in a lot of good group rides with the guys I used to bike race with years ago. I was able to do the HIM but it wasn't easy. I was able to swim a 30 min 1.2 mile swim and biked at 20mph but hurt my foot for the run.
You will have to really step up your totals to get in HIM shape given that you don't really have a swimming or running background to pull from. I was lucky in that my fitness wasn't up to snuff like it used to be, but I was able to pull from years and years of swimming and some years of bike racing to get through. Not sure how the run would have went if I hadn't hurt my foot though.

if you chose to go ahead I suggest highly doing one or two small tri's beforehand to get the feel of running after a good bike and swim. good luck and have fun

Thank you very much for your input! I'm going to think carefully before attempting this since I'm working + studying for a masters degree and I have my girlfriend all that to fit in one day.
It's hard!

The crazy balancing act (working, commitments to family, friends, and girlfriend, traveling, and training) is my favorite part of doing triathlons. It's hard to do, but it makes it that much better when you cross the finish line. It's been said before, but I'll say it again, "If it was easy, everyone would do it".
Good luck in your training!!
5 months you can do it man no biggie seriously. A HIM is a long race don't get me wrong but it is not that difficult to train for in 5 months...

Hey folks,
I've gotten challenged by a friend of mine. We used to bike together and he said "I doubt you will finish this HIM here on september". And I kind of want to do it but guess what:
I'm a lot of time without training SERIOUSLY. Only eventual runs and rides and no swimming.
Do you guys think I can build up for 21km run and about 2km swim in 5 months?
The bike leg is cool for me. I can surely do 90km without more hassles.
I don't want to RACE I just want to finish.
