i'm in the process of buying a tri bike and i want some opinions.
its narrowed down to the equinox 7 or 9.

both bikes have the same frame. the only differences between the two is 1. 7 is 105 9 is ultegra
2. 7 has bontrager select aero wheels and the nine has bontrager race lite aeros ( one step up ) and i intend on racing on whatever wheels it comes with for now.
3. 7 has alum aero bars and 9 has carbon aero bars
4. 7 is white and 9 is black personally i favor the black a bit more.

is it worth spending $500 more on the 9?

I purchased a 7 in December 2005 and love it. It's a great first tri bike and for my first true season of triathlons it did just fine. If I were you I'd save the $500 and just work on upgrades and a fit on the 7.

I just upgraded my 7 with a set of VisionTech TriMax integrated race-bend aerobars and a Specialized toupe saddle. My position is much more aggressive and the bike looks a whole lot meaner.

Either way the choice is yours. Personally, I find satisfaction cruising on my relatively inexpensive bike and passing guys on full-carbon decked-out bikes.

Get the 7, save the $500. Then buy a disc cover for the rear and a Hed Jet 60 or 90 front. Then you have a fast bike.
The 9's color is better, but the components arent really worth the price difference to me. You will want to swap the stock aerobars in any case. I like Profile's T2, but you might not. Either way, the stock bars are anchors. Swap em at the time of purchase and you prolly wont even have to pay extra.

I have been racing and training on a pair of Bontrager Aero Selects for over two seasons now. Theyve been trued twice. Theyre solid wheels.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Another vote for the 7. I got mine last fall. Spent some money this winter to get better aero bars (Profile T2's and wing base bar), bought Ultegra brakes and front and rear deraileurs off of e-bay and got some Hed Jet wheels for it too. Finally, had a gift certificate at a LBS and used it to buy a Bontrager carbon crank.

The advice to save the $$ is good advice. I raced my E-7 stock for 2 sprints and a HIM last year and did just fine. Save some $$ and put it towards upgrades later on once you figure out what you like and don't like.
