I noticed that the upcoming IM races will provide PowerBar gel. I have always used and trained with Hammer gel. Does anyone know if there is a big difference between these two in taste, texture, effects on the stomach-etc.

Yes there is.
Try them to see if they work for you or bring your own. Many people byogels/drinks etc to races - not everyones stomach is made of iron.

Personally i don't have any problems with gels but can't stomach the gatorade.

I used Power Bar 2 years ago then I changed to accelerade gel and 6 months ago to GU each change based on better results and because I liked the texture better.

You should go out and buy some Power Gels and train with those so you don´t have any surprizes on race day

Powergel (many of the flavors anyway) bumped up the sodium content over the last year. I useboth, but mainly Powergel as that is more typically on course. I have no issue switching between them.

I love Power gel...have used Hammer extensively, too. Can switch like RV with out much problem...however:
Found I have to consume more Hammer to keep functioning compared to Power gel. I'm a BIG fan of the Tangarine/Double Caffine.
But that's me...find what works for you. Train with what's on the course...saves a lot of hassle on race day.

There's a big difference- mainly in the sugars used.

I cant really use Hammergel- it plays with my stomach- but me and Powergel are best friends. Strawberry- Banana= yummy!!!

Definately give it a test run before the race.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

<---- Also a huge powergel fan. As for texture, it actually varies quite a bit depending on the flavor. Chocolate is very, very thick (more like a paste) while most of the fruity ones are more thin. I second the "yummy" on Strawberry-Banana! My only complaint with powergel is that there isn't a mechanism to prevent people from throwing away (littering) the top after they rip it off. Some gels have a little tether between the pack and the part you tear off which is more environmentally friendly (of course, I pocket both parts).

If I'm sticking (pun?) to one kind...I use a flask...

I just bought a case this last weekend on sale (figured for $10 cheaper I could try it) and tried one out last night ...actually pretty good--used vanilla. It goes down smooth. The only thing is its a bit sweeter than gu, but no tummy issues.
