New from Indianapolis
Welcome to the site!
What distances are you training for? By mini do you mean also training for a half marathon?
For race snacks I'm a big fan of "random snacky food I would crave". I use swedish fish, fig newtons, bagel pieces, pretzels, etc. It depends on the type of race and distance for me. I've also been known to mix candy bar bits in a bag of energy bar pieces :)
kyillee - ha! I haev to laugh to myself. Only Indy people know it as THE MINI. Yes, its the major 1/2 marathon in Indianapolis and is run in conjuntion with The Indy 500. We don't have a major marathon, but THE MINI draws 30,000 participants. I laugh because no-one i talk to from outside of Indiana knows what I am talking about when I say "The Mini." But it seems that everyone who owns running shoes in this city runs this race at least once in their life.
durhamj11 - welcome. Glad to have some more Indpls people around. Lotsa good races coming up this summer. Have you planned a schedule yet? As for your question try easdy to digest foods before training / racing and during. Peanut butter based stuff works well for me. Also, I hate their taste but fig newtons have worked well for me in the past couple of years. Remember to try in training before you race, you dont want an upset stomach to be a part of the race memories.
Ooops :-) Yea i forgot that we call it the 'mini'. My sister lives in Cali and they have huge races every weekend. Not just one big race a year!
I will have to try some of those snacks. Are they easy to carry during a race. I am not sure how I would carry cookies or what not. I usually die out around mile 7. My lungs are not tired but my body is ready for a rest.
CG - I have not planned a major schedule for the summer yet. I have the tri in April and I am hoping to do many more. I may stick with the sprint tri's because I am not a very good swimmer yet. I know I will be attempting the RAIN ride this year, which I am looking forward to. I would also like to try some kind of adventure race this summer. I have a friend that is very good at navigating so we are going to try and get a few more and give that a try!
Do you run the MINI every year??
ARs are fun, too :) It's nice to know people that are navigators!
I usually use the more "real food" stuff biking (and it goes in a bento box or a jersey pocket), as I rarely take fuel with me on runs. However, I have a few times. I have a small running waist pouch that I've used with some success. It's sold as a "5k pouch" because it is smaller, but it fits pretty much everything I could need on long runs. I also sometimes wear an amphipod running belt that has 4 small bottles and a small pouch, and sometimes I'll put a snack in that pouch.
ARs, Tris, here are your links to get local info:

Thanks for the info!! I will be checking out the Adventure Races and hopefully be doing one soon!
I will look into getting some kind of belt I could run with. I know my sister used one, and after she got used to it, she didn't want to run without it!
welcome! i am a beginner here in indy. i'm training for the mini too, it's going to be tough for me. i'm also shooting for the muncie endurathon HIM in july, possibly a sprint or oly in august. have fun and good luck!
cg- are you in the cc tri club here? i was thinking about going to a meeting sometime.
Yes, the tri club is fairly new. Lotsa members and good sponsors. I can't say that the group workouts are plentiful, but its still a new club ... everyone is great.
There are great race organizers in indy. i would definately check out the sprint races at Eagle Creek (tuxbro.com) and Terre Haute in May ... the swim is cold but bike and run are good for a spring race.
Lotsa good bike only races (if your into that sort of thing) around indy also (www.indianaraceseries.com). Zipp's corporate headquarters is in Indy (Speedway for those of you familiar) so look out for their sponsored athleates / team - they win alot of time trials!!

Hi! I'm new to this forum and new to the triathlon! I have been training very hard and kind of worried about the swim. I am also trying to train for the mini at the same time, so I am having a hard time trying to fit in the time to get all my workouts in. I have been running distance for a few years now, and road biking for the past two. One of my major problems is FUEL!!! I seem to run out a lot and I know that has to do with my eating habits. Any suggestions on snacks I could take during a race? I have tried the gels but they usually seem to cramp my stomach up.
Jen :)
