Possible or Impossible? Please help
I'd say just start the plan and see how it feels. Healing injuries are so personal that one person might have had the same thing and then been fine with the same plan and race, while another couldn't make it through week 1.
Just keep in mind that #1 = keeping healthy. #2 is doing that race :)
Speaking from an entirely unqualified position as far as HIM distance farthest I have done was 1/4 IM distance(but do know a bit about pain and injury recovery along with an aging body)
I agree with Kyillee. Just take it easy and don't kill yourself with intensity right away, good stretching, resistance training, diet and rest! and Like Kyillee said let the training plan go and see how your body acts!
I wish you well! Hope you make it!
Keep on Tri-ing

thank you all. I think I will take your advice and continue on with the program and see how it goes. Keeping my fingers crossed that I can complete the race!
Thanks again!

I had that at one time, and as long as I stay with my strength program and don't do things I don't need to do (like train for stair climbs or high impact sports besides running), I've been fine.
The key is keeping your quads strong and balanced, so I assume you've been given exercises to target your VMO, since many of us, particularly women, tend to have a weak VMO in relation to the vastus lateralis and rectus femoris.
And also be sure you are stretching your iliopsoas and rectus femoris really well after every ride and run.
Something else that I used to do regularly and still do as needed is to ice my knees after long rides (4+ hours) and long runs (1:45+ hours). I have the big wrap ice packs, so I can wrap each knee and lay down, which is always a good idea, and if you can eat your recovery meal at the same time, perfect! It's not the patella itself that benefits from the ice, but the patellar tendon and all the quadriceps insertions points around it.
Stay on top of your therapy exercises and stretching, don't overtrain and you should be just fine!
I've dealt with chondromalcia of the patella, too. Until you get your quads strong and balanced get yourself a Cho-pat Dual Knee Strap and wear it when you run.
What happens is since the quads are unbalanced (one side is stronger than the other), they pull your patella out of the little groove that its supposed to track through causing pain and tendonitis. The strap puts the right amount of pressure in the right places to keep your patella tracking correctly. This should help ease any pain and keep you running until your strengthing exercises kick in.
And like kona said - Ice is your best friend! You should be fine, have a great race!

Ok, so here is the question. I really want to do a HIM, looking at the Great Buckeye Challenge on Aug 19. I have a training plan that doesn't look impossible (from the book, training plans for multisport athletes) and have no doubt I can't complete it.
But here is the question, I have been dealing with chondromalcia of the patella and the Dr. just released me 3 weeks ago. He said my knee is in great shape. I have taken it slow and have gotten up to 6 miles running without major knee pain. Cycling I am working on hill repeats and did 12 miles of hill repeats yesterday, with no problem. I have completed all the distances alone before (I've run many 1/2 marathons and done lots of 50+ bike rides). The concern I have is with my knee, will it hold up? I am taking all precautions, stretching, strength training and its all helped a lot. Just wanted to get some feedback from you all.
Thanks!
