IMAZ'ers, get ready for the HEAT!!!!
Yeah thanks Bryan I really appreciate it man like I needed a downer today :) j/k I am looking forward to a good warm spell in Tempe...
Humidity is in the 10-15% area as well just to add insult to injury.
I've been to Arizona and loved it, but it is hot. However 10-15% humidity is a cake walk. During july and august here in PA the temp usually is around mid to upper 80's and often gets to the mid 90's, but the humidity is so thick that you can literally see the air! Nothing like breaking a sweat and sticking to your clothes just walking out to your car. Arizona's hot, but it is a dry heat.
(Spoken like a true northerner that's not doing IMAZ!!!)

We have the equivalent of AZ desert habitat here in the Okanagan at IMC. I did the race in 2005 but the humidity is a little higher than you have it. Actually, looking forward to the warmth. This has been a hellish training season for this race. Yay heat!

Seems like most would agree, but I'll take mid 90's with high humidity over mid 110's with low humidity any day!
I am looking for 60's with low humidity and a thin cloud cover with a 20mph wind that keeps rotating to always be a tail wind for me. I just know it's going to be like that in Tempe next month I know it! :)
yeah thats hot but in dubai,
we are always in the 90's, and 100% humidty. sprint tri on friday at 7oclock b4 the heat gets up too high.

100%? Really? That would mean the the dew point is in the 90's and there's fog - not haze - fog everywhere...
No doubt it's a muggy place, but a dew point of 90 degrees is extremely rare, even in Dubai.
Oh, and good luck in your sprint tri :)
Dew point is a much better indicator of how 'stuffy' it is out. The local weather station always lists it during heat waves and they have a scale and I believe anything over 70 something for the dewpoint is considered oppressive. When it's 90-95 degrees and a 70-75 dewpoint the air is hazy and feels real heavy, plus you sweat/get sticky just walking outside. Very uncomfortable to be in, let alone train in. A dewpoint of 90 would be unreal!

Today was my last long ride before IMAZ. I went 5:52:30, 130.7miles, averaginbg 22.3mph. I went through 9 bottles of hydration, 5 PowerGels, and 2 Cliff Bars. But what really made this a standout, I pee'd while riding! I wasn't sure if I could but knew I really needed to at IM, so I gave it a go. It was so easy, messy, but easy.

That's a nice ride! I'm kind of amazed that's your first time though, as you've done some long rides before this one.
That doesn't seem like a lot of food for a 6 hour ride - what are you drinking for hydration?
I pee'd while riding!
Yeah, that's one thing I never did in training. Was it hard to do? I find I don't get the big urge to pee until I'm off the bike, or at least out of aero. Three weeks left to practice, I guess!

3 bottles of Gatorade, 6 bottles of water after stopping twice to refill. All in, I consumed about 1600 calories between the Gatorade, gels, and bars. That's 250 calories per hour. I would have had an additional 250-500 if I had been planning on doing any thing else after the ride, but I wasn't so I didn't need anymore to complete the workout comfortably. I also had a 500 calories breakfast 60 min prior to the start. So now I'm up to 350 calories per hour to burn plus stored glycogen in my muscle and liver. Good to go!
When you say you are amazed, I misssed the meaning. Amazed that I hadn't ridden 130 miles before or that I pee'd? :)

Nope, very easy. I was pleasantly suprised. I stood up on the pedals, feet even, dropped my heals (don't ask, just felt better), and gave a little push. Next thing I know it's just flowing down my leg and into the wind! Very messy.

Hey BBB we need to get a plan going to sneak Red a few extra drinks so we can finish before he does... Actually you might need a few extra drinks as well so I can pull the gold at IMAZ from the Trifuel pack.
Red's gonna be MILES ahead of us sloths man. He is out of our league. I bet if he had a bottle of JD in him he would still finish 8hrs before us LOL!!! I suppose if we sabbotage his bike of something :p

I ride a 1985 Schwin 10 speed I keep chained to a lamp post at the corners of Rio Salado and Priest in Tempe. Dude, I just tried out the peeing-while-riding thing today. It's awesome! Bryan, thanks for the tip about standing up, that was key.
Something Bryan didn't mention is how nice it is to have cool pee running down your leg on a hot day. It'll actually be really good to help cool off the legs during the race.
90's may sound bad, but in IA we get to train in the 90's during the summer with 100% humidity so the 10% will be a nice change.
"If your not going to win, make the fellow in front of you break a record."

I just want to go on record as saying how impressed I am with all of you coming to race here at IMAZ who live and train in the northern part of the country and Canada. How you all manage to get in your mileage, wether indoors on trainers our outdoors in the brutal elements, my hat is off to you. :)
Now the bad news. It just got hot here. I mean REALLY hot. We went from day time highs in the 60's-low '70's to almost 90 in about 2 days. This is fairly common, but it does not bode well for a cool day in April. The thing about AZ, once it get's hot, it stays hot. Humidity is in the 10-15% area as well just to add insult to injury.
So, crank up the heat in your homes and before you head down here and get your bodies heat acclimated as best you can and practice hydration, hydration, hydration. It will make your day April 15th!
