A question for the mountain bikers.

Due to a little accident I have to replace one of my full-suspension mountain bikes. One of the bikes I am looking at is the Jamis Dakar XCR Expert. I like everything about it except that set up of the rear shock doesn't leave room for a water bottle. It does have mounts on the bottom side, but don't know if I like that location--getting covered with dirt and mud, also the extra reach. Although I carry most of my liquid in my camelbak, I like having that water bottle available and more convenient, especially on longer rides or races. So, how big of a deal is this? I'd appreciate any thoughts or experiences.

I ride a specialized epic and for a long time only had a bottle on the bottom tube. It does get a bit muddy, but most of the time my teeth are, too. I'm also just not very concerned with that part, or would wipe it on my jersey before taking a drink. It also wasn't hard to get used to reaching it.

I only recently added a side-loader cage on the bike, and find that one actually harder to reach now.

Hey Kyillee,

I checked out he Epic (the 07s) on the Specialized Website and it looks like they can mount the water bottle on top of the tube. On the Jamis it only can go underneath. So is yours on top or underneath?

Personally, I'd buy a bigger Camelback or carry a water bottle in the pack. I think a water bottle there is just going to get gunked up, or bounced off a log or rock.

ooooh... now i get what you meant. I wasn't picturing it right. I can do either on the epic.

I have a friend who had a bottle under and ended up scrapping that idea (also on an epic). I think in part because it was hard to reach, in part because it got close to getting hit on stuff. I'm not sure why else... I just know she switched it when she saw how I was fitting 2 bottles.

Second this idea. I hate stuff on my bike, and have been known to carry water bottles in my camelback when needing more water.

If your riding isnt too technical, I imagine the bottle on the bottom would work ok. I have seen a lot of people use this set up, so it works for at least some people.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

I also use a filled camelback and then throw in a couple of extra bottles.
I took off my bottle cages because it was hard and far to reach while riding. Fell off a few times trying.
