Lifetime Fitness has an outdoor tri at Lake Nokomis here in Minneapolis that looks pretty cool. I guess it's huge and NBC filmed it for a "Battle of the Sexes" Equalizer-timed show. I'm thinking about signing up for the short course. It's a lot of money but i think it'd be a great experience w/ the pros there and all the spectators, etc. Do any of you have any experience w/ this race?

Didn't do it last year, I just watched and took pictures. I did it the previous 2 years. It has it's pro's and con's.

Pro's: awesome course either sprint or olympic distance, tons of spectators, newbie friendly, staggered swim start on sprint distance for sure (one person starts every 3 seconds) I can't remember if they do that on the olympic start or not. If you do the sprint race, you can watch the pro's come in and out of transition, you have plenty of time but you should be resting.

Con's: expensive, sprint distance race starts really late especially when the transition area closes so early, it can be HOT, the transistion area is small and it can be a tight fit setting up your bike because there are so many participants, parking is a mess.

I have enjoyed participating in the event except that one year it was really really hot.

This race is on my calendar every year - it's absolutely top notch. It's extremely well organized, lots of excitement about the pro turnout, and a beautiful course. I definitely suggest it - I don't think you'll be disappointed.

One thing, as mentioned - Minnesota can definitely be hot that time of year, and the last two years it's peaked near 100 degrees or more. Last year they actually made a race time announcement to shorten the Olympic course (which I took issue with, and made that known to the race director). Anyway, be prepared for a warm race regardless.

Regarding the transition areas, I've not found them any more cramped than other major races - similar I suppose to Ironman, or maybe Chicago (I haven't done Chicago), where there are lots of athletes. It's never hindered my race day, for whatever that's worth.

Parking does suck though - it's an urban race, so lots of side street parking. Get there early enough as I like to, though, and it's no problem.

Good luck!

i'm leaning towards trying it but it is expensive. parking isn't an issue as I live fairly close to the race site and have friends closer so i could figure that out.

I have to agree with the above comments. If you live in Minnesota (or nearby mid-west) it is a "must-do" event. Best crowd support of any tri I have done. My wife is starting up tri, so I now have to share the expense bugdet and won't be doing it this year.
