Anyone use Tri Bike Transport for IM? If so, do they sell out space? How far in advance do you need to make reservations?

It sounds so much easier than flying with a bike.

I am doing it this year with IM AZ and they do sell out of space so if you are going do it soon...

not quite sure what it costs, I think around 150 - 180. But look at it this way. Flying a bike costs at least 50 each way, maybe more, plus you have the possibilty that it is broken in transit by people who don't give a $hit about bikes, or don't know any better, and the possibility that it gets flown to the wrong city (happened to me).

So even if Tri bike transport costs a little more, what you are getting for that extra money is an amazing value in my mind. First off, the bike is dlivered right to the transtition area, that means you don't have to hall it to the rental car and around the airport. Second, you are pretty much guaranteed the thing is going to get there and in one piece. All of this equals low stress before IM - with is well worth the small amount of money you would save flying it.

I'm looking for IMLP in July...is a couple months soon enough? Do I need to make a reservations now?

I have no doubt in my mind that it's way easier and in some ways cheaper than flying.

I don't have any thoughts on intl shipping for IM, but I can speak to Tri Bike Transport.

Definitely use Tri Bike Transport...and definitely go ahead and reserve!! I reserved my spot before IMFL last year pretty early - the price doesn't change if you wait, and the risk of there not being space isn't worth waiting.

The only thing that I would say to keep iin mind with this service was that you do have to take delivery of the bike from the TBT location (a few yards away from TA) a couple of days before the race. This should be OK for you if you plan to do a short ride, and because you have to set up all of the race numbers, and particularly if like me you have myriad other obsessive compulsive pre-race things that you have to do to the bike. I only mention this because depending on how far away your accommodation is from the race site (how far you want to ride to deliver your bike to TA the day before the race) you might need to consider different rental car options for getting it back and forth.

Aside from the lack of stress and concern with the bike during travel I'd say the best part of this service was being able to drop off the bike right after the race and not have to think about it until it was safely delivered back to Denver.

Tribike transport is a great service, and a great group of guys who love triathlon.
As mentioned, reserving early makes things less stressful for you, but another thing to consider is that these guys have to plan the routes and pick up locations for all of the trucks they use to get to each event. registering early allows them to be more organized and efficient which benefits everyone.
a win win as they say

Oof! Here's what it would cost me to fly the bike on Delta:

Oversized $100
Extra bag $50
If I tried to buddy up and put two bikes in a double box $25 for excess weight.

That's EACH WAY!!!!

TBT here I come!

As for Kentucky...probably not. They're partnered with IM NA. Kentucky isn't part of that race management group.

Oh well... it was worth finding out. I knew they weren't partners, but figured they might have already (or been trying to) set something up as it is an IM in their area. Guess it means Mike and I get to both fly with bikes and all gear...

Definitely use TriBike Transport. I used them for IMFL and at the airport on the way home I saw two of the airline security personnel sitting and bouncing up and down on a bike case they had opened to inspect, just to try and close it back up. When I saw that, I was really, really glad I used TBT.

On the other hand, TBT did not package my bike up very well for the return trip. The box ended up looking like this: http://ironmom.blogspot.com/2006/11/oh-happy-day-my-bicycle-is-home.html and I was not happy about it. Fortunately, the bike came through just fine (having a titanium frame did not hurt, I'm sure). Still, I think they are better than taking pot luck with the airport personnel...
