couple "dumb" questions
question 1:
it's a personal choice, lots of people i know swear by them bu i cant use it in a race, i just go and go till there is none left. You will do and feel better if you can maintain your HR in the middle to top of your aerobic zone. my advice is try a pre IM race with one and see how you like it.
Question 2:
this all depends on how "open" you are there are bathrooms on some courses, call the race organizer to find out. otherwise you just pull over and let it rip on the road side. If you have some skill you can coast on the flat or a down hill, stand up on the pedals, pull your knicks down and let it rain....there is another forum on "the Iron man Technique" somewhere around this site. the other option and by far the most Ferrel is to just wet your self.
Speed Kills. Strength Punishes
1) I use mine in HIM and IM distance. No need in shorter races as you are going as hard as you can. In IM it is easy to go to hard too early - and the HRM helps keep you from blowing up.
2) Lots of choices. Typically there are bathrooms at aid stations, but there can be lines. The side of the road works fine. Or can try the peeing on the bike. Can be upsetting to whoever is downwind from you.
Also especially in long distance races make sure you drink more than just water, must keep your electrolytes in balance.

Do you where the HRM in the water?
1. I wore a HRM in the IM because I didn't want to overamp on the bike and blow up on the run. Judging by the number of walking wounded that I passed on the run course, more than a few folks did just that. I liked being able to focus on my HRZ instead of on the speed of any people who might be passing me. I would probably think about wearing it for HIM distance races as well as IM in the future, though I've done HIMs without the monitor.
2. Depends on personal preference. I know that a lot of distance athletes just let fly on the bike, some without bothering to pull down shorts. The HIM courses I've done have had porta-potties on the bike and run course, probably every 25 miles on the bike course, and ever 3 - 5 on the run. I've used the portapotties on HIM and IM races, but I think I need to learn a little immodesty because it always costs me time.

Do you where the HRM in the water?
I wear it for the swim, as I will typically have on my bike jersey as well. Tho, I don't reference the HRM while in the water.

as I train for my first HIM a few "dumb" questions have come up and Im wondering if you guys can help.
1. Im base training and plan on speed training with my Heart Rate Monito/specific zonesr. From what Ive read I got a better chance of finishing and doing well if I control my HR during the race and keep it in my race specific zone. How come when I watch Ironman footage I NEVER see anyone wearing a heart rate monitor? Am I wrong in thinking the race will be more predictable if I stay in a certain zone?
2. Ive been drinking so much water lately Im in the bathroom about every 90 minutes. I cant stay on the trainer or the treadmill for more than 60-90 minutes w/o hitting the can. Are there bathrooms on the course? Im assuming you try to hold it until transiton but what if you cant? Are bathrooms mapped out on the course? Am I drinking too much?
