Too late in the season to start training with power?
I actually just started training with power about a month ago and I don't think it is too late at all. IN fact, I would argue that right now is the perfect time. I like the power meter best for my tempo or harder intervals as it allows me get where I want and force myself to stay there. It is also good for the endurance rides too make sure you don't go out too hard. The first thing you want to do is establish your LT on the bike by doing a 30 minute time trial and then figure out your numbers from there. Have fun with it!
USAT just gave my roommate a powertap this week. One of our training buddies just used it two days ago to establish some ranges for this part of the season. You'll need to re-evaluate those numbers every few months anyway as your fitness changes.

Not fast enough.
It is never too late! Since it can take a season to get used to using the thing and understanding the numbers, you should go ahead and start right away!
You have plenty of time before your first race to get a lot of benefit from the power meter. I'd highly recommend heading over to http://cruciblefitness.com and reading everything you can about power training over there; also go to the forum (free) and hunt around. That would be my coach's website :)
Am I better off throwing away the polar analysis application, and just uploading straight to trainingpeaks? or should I use both? I'm using a Mac, but I can also run windows on here.
Most people buy/use Cycling Peaks for their analysis software. It handles any type of power meter. Trainingpeaks does not provide "complete" analysis of your power files.
Okay, cycling peaks. I was wondering what the difference was. The training peaks website isn't very helpful. I'll look at cycling peaks.

I just ordered a polar bike/run HRM and a power add-on. I also have the Training with Power book, but haven't read much yet. I'm wondering if its too late in the season to start a training with power regiment, or if I'm better of just tracking numbers for now, and starting right early next year.
My key race is fairly early, its Viking Man in Idaho (http://vikingman.org/) on June 2nd.
I'm in the second half of Base 2, but I haven't been sticking to a training plan very well. I've been trying to do base style workouts, though, training at a relatively low HR, though possibly not low enough, thats one reason I got the HRM.
I'd appreciate any advice on this. Thanks a lot.
