I posted the other day about how much I liked early morning workouts. I have now stepped into the build phase and my workouts are getting more intense. I DO like getting up, but actually don't want to get up so early to eat as hour before training. What should I do to make sure these workouts are quality? I do take a gel and some Cytomax before heading out as I thought these would get in my system the fastest.

My question is whether there is value in making your late night snack bigger with more calories, or is the sleep time (7 hours) too long for it to matter and your just putting in too many calories??

The way my schedule works, on days I have a BT run or bike and a Swim, I have to do the run or bike first thing in the morning.

I will just use gels and/or ensure to get in the calories for the early workouts. And that is pretty much the same as I do for races, so it works out well for me.
I thought it was best not to eat a lot late in the evening.

Hello my friend:
Surely as RV wrote is not the best time to eat at night, particulary late night...not good for a healthy GI phisiology and for managing weight.
The best aproach I would say, if you think or feel running on empty tank, and your trainning is harder; fuel up during the day, increasing the caloric intake during the day hours, and not before going to bed.
In the morning as most of us do, keep your food intake simple, and of rapid digestion, like gels, bars, sports drinks, maybe a banana.
Now having a late snack is not bad as long it is something simple for an easy digestion.

I start my workouts around 6:30am, and cannot tolerate solid food (at all during training). I am finding however, that I can tolerate a Hammer SE powder mix of about 200 calories 30min to an hour before my workout. That extra fuel seems to top off my reserve tank and makes for a better workout.

I second the ensure, boost, and other "meal replacement" beverages. They are easy on the stomach and have a nice mix of calories, fat, protein, etc. I think gatorade even makes a shake type product these days.

I forgot all about the good old Ensure...really a good option before going to bed or before trainning...

I do the same with a slimfast (the old regular ones) they have the 4/1 carb protien ratio and my tummy can handle it
