I just recently decided to run a triathlon, and while an experienced cycler and runner, I'm new to swimming.

I managed to swim 1500m in 55 minutes, but I have no idea how fast or slow that is. Is that a decent time for a first time swimmer? (and honestly, I mean first time swimming laps)

Where is a good place to look to find out what a good time is? (in each portion of the race)

I guess I need a goal before I can really work towards it.

hey casey

great to have you on board. 55 mins is a good effort for first time ever swimming laps. however in a race, the first people out of the water will be done in 19-22 Min's. then the rest usually between 22 and 30. for the bike its a shade under an hour for the good guys and up to 1.5 hrs. and the run is about 33-40 Min's for the guns and up to 1 hr for the rest.

remember you are new to the sport and ALL of us had to start from somewhere!

i think that's great for your first time! congrats!

while i train i try to think of my 100m pace, kind of similar to a mile pace in running. so for that 22-30 min category iron man is speaking of, you would want a pace of 1:45-2:00. you can use a goal pace to do sets of 100's, similar to track work in running.

Thats not bad really for your first time. Like beatcatcher said try to get your 100 below 2min and that is about at the middle of the pack.

First of all congratulations for signing up for your first Tri, you will love it you´ll see!

Second....there will always be people that come out of the water first (unless you are realy good and don´t know it yet) but the great thing about tris is that you are competing against yourself.

Why are you competing? To prove something to yourself? Then go out train and give YOUR best on race day.

If you want to compete against other people then maybe you will need some time and a few races to gain experience great training, gear...blah blah etc.

Go out there and have FUN. this is a great sport you will be hooked and don´t worry too much about other people in your first race, you will have enough to worry about with yourself (believe me!).

Hyperactive Trifueler!!!! (I refuse to let the status go :p)

well said t dog, lord knows i'm not going to be in any shape to compete against anyone, nor do i really want to.

it's complete vs. compete, just one "l" that makes all the difference.
