Out in Archer, FL (near Gainesville...aka Titletown). 10+ mile out-and-back with rollers and strong headwind going out. Since I just started doing road races a few weeks ago, I was racing with the Cat. 5s. Also, since I'm triathlete, I should've destroyed these guys. Of course that was before I left my shoes at home in the closet. Oops. No one at the race seemed to have extra shoes in my size, so 20 min before my start time (still no warm up yet!) it is decided that I'm going to duct tape my shoes to my pedals. No one has duct tape. I figured there would've been more rednecks in Archer, FL with duct tape in the cab of their pick-up, but I guess they slept in today! A team mom (who also made muffins, bless her heart....they were delicious, too!) had a bit of packing tape left over from boy scout camp, so we gave it a try. It lasted about half a pedal stroke. I did the whole TT in tennis shoes. Oh well, live and learn. Don't forget stuff at home. Oh wait, I've done that a bunch....guess I didn't learn too well! I still took 5th for the 5s with an average of about 24 (very glad about that since my roommate was giving me hell the night before about my disc not being as good the Zipp 999s he borrowed from a triathlete friend of ours...the roommate stayed home sick, though...serves him right!) Besides a little heckling from the starting officials (and a lot from the cycling team), it was still a fun day. I might have to stay home from the team meeting on Tuesday, though....there's only so much heckling you can take in one week! There's a crit in the morning, so hopefully there won't be anything else that well end up in more embarrassing stories on Tuesday. Just pray that I don't roll a tire off in a turn (I made my first attempt at mounting my own tubulars this week. They LOOK good....hope they stay on!)
