Hey everyone! Again, long time no talk...which will soon be changin'.

Things goin' AOK with workouts, swimmin', runnin' and sad to say not alot of ridin' on the trainer. :( Which it is my downfall but I really dislike ridin' on that thing and bein' inside. Cleveland has been snowin' and freezin' so...yea. Gettin' up to 5 miles now w/ runnin' and doin' good. Takin' things very slow which is killin' me but have been told by my wise friend to do so (love ya Mike). Swimmin', awesome. I think my swimmin' will be my best this season b/c I have more time to do that b/c of where I work. (I'm a lifegaurd).

ANYWHO, with my trainer. I've been on it from time to time and today I was on for a half hour which is as long as I can usual go without goin' insane. My butt didn't hurt as bad for once (which is odd) but I have a question on my back wheel. It is "scuffin'" onto the medal piece which is causin' an annoyin' noise which everytime I pedal it is horrible and gets annoyin' even w/ my MP3 player on. The tire is my old set and have my new set on the front one but I don't know how to have the noise go away...or do some of you have this problem and it is normal??

Let me know, I am just askin' away with the questions which like I said will be pretty much constant here in the next month or so. Have to split for now, time to get my kid some food I guess. ::sigh:: Guess she deserves supper w/ ridin' on her horsey next to me when I ride and get my water for me when I needed it. (lol) Have a great day everyone!

I was expecting to hear all kinds of noise from my rear tire from reports i read similar to yours when i first got my trainer. But i have had zero problems. I have it set so that there is just enough pressure between the tire and the roller to ensure traction. Perhaps yours is set too tight?
As for not going insane while riding on your trainer, try watching a DVD. I find that helps a lot.

DVD's are a great idea, especially if you can get your hands on copies of any of the major cycling races from the past few years. I have found that they are inspiring and very interesting to watch. I had no idea about the professional aspect of the sport until last year and now I am hooked. Tomorrow I will be watching the 1996 TDF while doing a 2 hour 15 minute ride and am looking forward to it.

I can't help you with the tire noise. Shaver's suggestion makes sense.

Good to have you back.
I dunno about the wheel noise, you give too little info,
but you better take a very close look at it and figure it out because rubbing noises are not good and if ignored, usually lead to expensive repairs.

I just got done "playin'" w/ my trainer. I set it for it not to be too tight and I think there is somethin' up with my tire. It is barely touchin' and there is a spot on the tire where it touches the medal piece and does the noise. I guess my next thing would be to change that tire to my other old set to see if that works. I can't bare hearin' that noise. Sort of like hearin' finger nails on the chalk board.

I tried workin' out with the DVD approach, the races and it just sucks. I have to suck it up I am guessin', just would rather be outside. Hope soon!

Thanks for helpin' me out!

What type of trainer do you have? The one I use recommends cranking down pretty tight to ensure that the tire doesn't slip.

And have you looked at the wheel? If the wheel is out of true or out of round there may be a spot that is causing more or less pressure to be put on the tire which could be a source of your noise.

And DVD's are the only way to go. 2 hours goes by fasterthan you would think.

I watch the spinnerval DVD's and do the interval workouts. I tried to watch movies and found that I end up getting caught up in the movie and basically coast for chunks of time.

For those of you that watch movies, what intensity is the workout at?

Had to ride inside because of the snow...it's quite beautiful.
watched LOTR: Return of the King...extended version. Don't seem to coast much...just watch the RPE and an eye on the computer rode the last hour sort of hard....
If I'm watching TDF...I go hard when they go hard (sprints etc.)
Or Spinervals if I feel like having someone yell at me!

Hey Z...I bet your tire is slipping and causing the noise. The tire wears down and develops a flat spot. Every now and again I give my trainer a little crank to bring the tire a bit closer. That noise is usually just the rubber slipping on the metal and it tends to get worse as the tire heats up I think. I could be wrong, but check it out. Air up your tire and then give it a couple good turns so if you spin it real quick with your hand the tire doesn't slip.

I can't live on the trainer with out DVD's. I don't seem to have a problem coasting if anything my problem is looking down at my cyclometer all the time. As long as you watch your cadence I think it is all fine.

Personally, I can't watch drama shows, movies, etc. because they are all way too slow in tempo. Just talk, talk, talk, - maybe Jackie Chan movies.

So I prefer some up tempo action like ice hockey, basketball or my favourite - TdF.
As Anton noted above the pace is easier to follow and there is always variety. I have all stages for the last five years but I prefer watching the mountain stages over long flat stages when nothing seems to happen for hours on end.

Music videos would work but if I tape Much Music for six hours I have to fast forward through all the dumb talking, endless interviews of airheads discussing things they know nothing about; just play the damn music would you!?

I'll give out your ideas w/ the gettin' on the trainer w/ movies. Like stated before, just need to suck it up big time and do it. I have been runnin' indoors too which has sucked big time and doin' 5 miles on an indoor track is horrible. BUT, have to do it ya know? Things have been changin' for me w/ workouts but it has been for the best.

Thanks too on the trainer stuff as well. I cranked it closed to the tire and it seems to be okay. I'll give it a whirl here in a few to see how it goes.

well did about a 120 min ride last night on the trainer to the movie "the departed" it was easier to keep the intenisty up than I thought it would be. Perhaps the reason for that is base training on my bike is in the 135-145 hr zone. Helps having an alarm on the monitor to keep me in zone as I drift out of it because of the movie.

Had to do and unscheduled brick on the treadmill cause the movie was so dam long

looking forward to catching up on some movies now that I know it can be done

I haven't seen that movie yet either...heard it was fabulous. I would think it wouldkeep you movin' yet would drift you off to another world while riding.
