I am relativly new to triathlon and i dont mean to toot my own horn but im decently fast. ive read blogs where people talk about their sponsors sending them equipment and things. i was just wondering how does one get sponsored? do you just need to win or place high in big races. or qualify to be professional?

Unfortunatley david, unless you really are fast (as in top 10 in the country), a good sponsor is very hard to come by. It seems to be a business of who you know, rather than what you achieve.

However, I assume your an American, which if so, lucky you!!! A number of Americans over here have got some really good sponsorship (money and product), and their not very quick either (I think it's great how much support American co-operations give to triathletes). They told me it was just a matter of writing letters to various companies and getting lucky.

It's normally pretty easy to approach bike shops and get some gear off them for free, just print out a CV and take it down to your local cycle store.

Just remember if your approach a potential sponsor that you emphasise more on what is in it for them, rather than what is in it for you.

Be patient and I'm sure you'll be a fully funded - 8hrs a day training - professional in no time :D

Good Luck.

Mark.

It's not hard to get "sponsored" but that is a loose term. Technically I am sponsored by snickers marathon. Now all I get out of the deal is free snickers marathon bars, race clothes, media bonuses and stuff like that. I'm not great either I do pretty well but I'm not walking away with first and second place overalls any time soon. It's not a horrible deal like mine but you have to be DAMN good in order to get a full ride.

All you need "to get sponsored" is enough chutzpah to ask, and keep asking until you get what you need.
You can't always get what you want, but if you try, sometimes you get what..

oh, sorry. I was zoning out there.

Local races, with media coverage offers promotional opportunities for businesses. Even fundraising gets you sponsorship. It isn't always the US Postal Service, sometimes it's "Chico's Bail Bonds" but what the heck! A sponsor's a sponsor.

A Rolling Stones, and Bad News Bears reference in one post!! :D

I fill out applications every spring for Power bar, Amino Vital, and a bunch of others. I haven't got sponsored so far but I do get a nice letter back and usually some free product. I got a box of Power Bars and a Canister of Amino Vital Endurance and all it cost me was some time to fill out an online form.

Nothing to it, but to do it

Yeah, last year I was sponsored by my local pawn shop. They gave me $100 cash and a cell phone to use for the day if I called them from the top of the Richter Pass.

Funny though, they didn't want me to wear a t-shirt with their logo.

Wonder why not?

too slow for a pawn shop?

like others said there's varying degrees of sponsorship. I'm BOP but post on tri site like it was my job and helped start up a local tri club. some companies look for ambassadors for the sport. Degree deodarant was nice enough to put me on their team. no $ unless I got my name in the paper but lots of racing and workout clothes and deals on equipment

FWIW I believe recover-ease is putting together some sort of team and is looking for folks.

I was a member of a multisport team for awhile...sort of by default..they needed people. We had sponsers and I got some nice deals....however as the team received recognition those of us who were slower...well,we knew when it was time to go.
You can get sponsored, but you have to deliver. If you can't...you'll won't be able to hold on to it.

Sponsors look for fast people in one or all three events:

For instance, can you run a sub 33 minute 10k? what about at the end of an olympic triathlon? or come out of the water first? That'll make you stand out.

or sponsors look for great humble people who get face to face time with a lot of participants and spread triathlon's good vibes, and maybe get a word or two in about the product with those people.
