I love early workouts

Most of the winter, I have been “tolerating” my early morning runs and rides in the dark. Its brutal cold (well cold for the Southeast) and dark the whole time. This past week, the weather has turned a bit and has only been 48-50 for the lows. Also, the sun is coming up a little earlier so by the very end of my workouts, I’m getting a little bit of a sunrise.

It made me remember how much I really like these early morning sessions. The roads are empty and quiet. The sun coming up over the farms (I live in a rural part of Charlotte, NC) is always beautiful and peaceful. The best part to me though, I imagine all the regular schmoes who are probably still asleep and it makes me feel great! I like that not everyone does this and even though I am a corporate desk jockey, I have this part of me that is different, unique and something I am proud of.

Does anyone else love the early morning stuff or is getting out of bed torture no matter what season….

I prefer the early morning workouts.
I enjoy the running while it is dark... Tho it will be nice not to have to carry a flashlight.
No biking outside yet...another month or so before that happens.

I guess I am the opposite - I do about 90% + of my runs after 10 pm, sometimes even after midnight. Very peaceful! The only downside is that it is easy to get startled by critters. I almost twisted my knee once when a deer bolted a few feet to my side that I hadn't seen and I jumped... The moonless nights can get REALLY dark though so take a flashlight! I listen to podcasts when I run (often "This American Life") - once it was about haunted houses - I had the willies the whole way home!

better than coffee in the AM to get you going. sadly I do most of my stuff after 10 PM too. if I can stay awake and if I do work out I can't fall asleep - Wah!

proud and high or low and humble - many miles before I go

I love working out in the early mornings. It starts the day off on a perfect note. Though my job denies me from working out on most mornings, when I get the chance to workout in the morning, I would much rather do that.

And like you said, most people are sleeping or waiting in the Mcdonald's drive thru. By time we are done working out, most people are just getting up or filling themselves up with fattening food! SICK!

KEEP up the great work all you Triathletes out there!!!

I also love the early morning workouts. Running home and seeing beautiful sunrises sets the tone for a great day. I have become so used to working out in the mornings that my days don't feel right when I have to wait until the afternoon or night.

It is also a great feeling to be finishing up a Sunday 20 miler and running past driveways with the morning papers still sitting there.

I've been doing morning workouts as a compromise to have family time later in the day. I find it difficult to take the first few steps, you kow the ones that take me out of the nice warm bed, to go out and run or get on the trainer in the basement. But once I get up and get going, I do enjoy it. And I definitely feel better during days when I workout early, other days I just lack energy late in the day.

Wow -- you guys that do your working out after 10pm, I don't think I would be able to get to sleep afterwards? What do you do -- dinner, than preworhout snack? How soon after completing do you go to bed?

Now I tried it out for a while I shifted my morning work time from 7 am to 9am so I could work out. Before I would have to get up by 545 to be able to make it to work ontime and I don't think I could wake up before 5 just to work out. Well anyways I really enjoyed the morning workouts. I was a bit slower but I enjoyed it. The only problem was that it increased my traffic two fold so I am back to afternoon and late evening workouts :/

C'mon J - Getting up at 5:45!?! That isn't a morning workout. ;)
My alarm goes off at 4:00 so I can get my w/o in and get to work early.

Last week I bounded out of bed first thing I woke up to run down the beach and get in a 1-2km swim before breakfast.

Of course, I was in Playa del Carmen.

I hate early mornings... I think it's because our swim coach gives us nothing but insane swim sessions for no particular reason.

I enjoy my morning workouts, they get me up and help give me some spunk during the day as to where I would normally just do the usual. I just hate getting out of bed, it's so warm and cozy! The only compromise that I've had to make is to go running on the treadmill up at the gym because my husband doesn't like me running outside when it's dark. But there are these HUGE windows at the back of the gym and it's absolutely beautiful to look out as the sun comes up.

I think early moring workouts are why I love triathlons so much. It's an amazing way to start my day. It clears my head and gets me ready for every thing I need to do. It's funny, if I just leave my house in the morning-I don't know how cold it will be so I won't dread it as much. If I come home from work with the intention of going back out for a workout, I never want to leave my house again because I know how cold it is outside.... I've been thinking this for a while, it sounds silly now that I write it but, oh well!

Set goals...... but be here now. Enjoy the ride to the finish line.

Ok, but I would seriously vomit if I had to get out of bed at 4:00. I get up at 5:00, sip some coffee in front of the news to get the weather forcast (so I know what to wear on my commute) then around 6:00 I jump on my bike and head to work, shower and start at 7:00. When I was swimming with the team I was getting up at 4:30 to be in the water by 5:00 and I NEVER got used to it.

I never get the energy i have in a afternoon workout that i do in the morning. I do one early workout a week and thats enough for me!

It sure is a great feeling getting up and out and back before the masses start stirring.
I love having the roads to myself and watching the sunrises and morning animals while running/biking through the farms and ranches of NorCal.
Awesome way to start the day!!

I wish I could workout early - I get up at 4am and am on my desk at work no later than 5am. Afternoons for most (in the heat when the summer is on) and early am on weekends. Can't touch the late stuff - falling alseep by 9.

I am not a morning person by ANY means, but if I don't train in the morning, I'm a bear the rest of the day (ask my husband!). 6:00AM is my wake-up call and the only day its earlier is race day. (I too, would vomit if I got up any eariler :p ) I've tried the two-a-day workouts, but the afternoon/evening workout is always really difficult and slow. There's nothing like running alone at sunrise...

While I love the early morning...I have to ease into my days...a smug mug of tea..a nosh, check out "Frazz"...then I can move...I run better in the pm so my mornings will find me on the trainer...work on flexibility or swim (rare)

There isn´t that much love as there is a good friendship between early morning workouts and this Dog :D

The only thing i enjoy doing in the afternoon is running; I just love sunsets where I live. For everything else I have decided I have to say goodbye realy early to my sweet warm bed to actually enjoy my workouts, not skipping any because of work or because of feelling too tired at the end of the day.
