I don't know the guidelines on it... but one of my goals this year is to get about one a month to help keep my legs feeling flushed. And thanks for the reminder... it's time to get one for Feb! :)

Now that I am back to my IM training again, I am doing what I did last year--- I typically take Monday off from training all together. This after a long ride/brick on Sat and long run on Sunday. Monday is also massage day. I get them once a week. Off season (during the winter when I am just base training or marathon) I typically get one ever other week to once a month. I find them VERY beneficial. Best to not do it right before a long/hard work out since you COULD be a bit sore the next day (although this is good). Just what works for me.
That's exactly the same for me as it is for Brittda. Must be the same for other people then.
What I'd like and what I get are two different things  In the coming months prior to IM, I will get a monthly massage...not as much as I'd like, but definitely helps work out the junk. While I wait for the good stuff, I use my roller to work the muscles in my legs and calves.

The best time to get a massage is as often as possible! I get one per week.
Really, just as for your training, as long as you choose a consistent day of the week to get it, it will always yield the same benefit.
So assuming you have a repeating pattern of what day of the week you do each type of workout, then it doesn't matter which day you pick for the massage.
As a rule, during training don't get one BEFORE you work out :) You will be too mellow.
However, I've had a 15-min. massage (not too deep) right before a race, and it made me go FAST!
In terms of when during a taper to get a massage, no closer than 2 days out from a major race, if you are getting deep tissue work done. If you get work done 1 day before or even day of, it needs to be gentle, "fluff 'n buff" style, or else you risk upsetting your nicely rested muscles.
Maybe "massageman" or whatever his id here is will respond. He's worked on me. He will know best.

When is the best time in a training plan to get a massage? I am in base and am on 3 week cycles (3 hard weeks, 1 recovery week). Last week was 13+ hours, this week is 16+ and next week is 18+. The following week will be a 9 hr recovery week. I got some gift certficates to a local gym for a sports massage and was wondering when would be the best time in the cycle to use them. Obviously, I feel most fatigued and sore by the end of the third week, so I was thinking that would be best.
