After completing a 13 mi. run last week I noticed I had what appeared to be bruises underneath both of my big toes. I did some research and found out that I apparently am suffering a very common “injury” known as black toenail. I’m planning on competing in a ½ marathon in about a week and a half (on Mar. 3rd), and was just wondering if anyone has any advice on how to treat this injury. So far I have drained some of the fluid out from underneath both toenails. And, thankfully, I am still able to run despite the slight swollenness underneath the toenails.

I've heard it called "tennis toe" and I've had it several times - always from wearing tight shoes while playing football or basketball. Bigger shoes helped me a lot - not sure if that's the answer for you, since yours came from running.

Shoes that are too short or a too tight toe box or laced too loosely so your foot slides around too much or running downhill a lot in shoes that are too short.
There...that about covers it!
I'm sporting two blackies right now from my last ultra. No big deal
If it's comfortable now...should be ok to run and race on.

Yup, like everyone says above, too tight shoes. I usually go 1/2 size larger than my street shoes.

It's always a good idea though to go to your LSS to try on a few dozen pair and to pick their brains about shoe specs and which ones are best for the way you run, all shoes are different.

Training for my first marathon back in 2000, I ended up losing 8 of my toenails. Never painful, just kind of gross looking. Getting shoes a half size bigger definitely helps. What I've also done, and never had a problem since, is keep my toenails trimmed basically down to the quick. It's far less attractive than having a pedicure every week or two, but with no toenail long enough to hit against the shoe, there's no toenail to get injured.

Anton is right on. They are pretty common. As long as no pain issues, you should be good to go. The toughest part is finding the right shoe. May feel great at the store, but not quite the same after a 10 miler or so.

I appreciate all the replies. I bought some new, wider shoes. They seem to have helped out so far. And I haven't lost either toenail yet.
