Hey guys. Newbie question here. Im in year 2 of tri races and I love it. Im training for my first 1/2 in July.

Anyways, Ive developed my own workout schedule and am in a "base phase" for the next 8 weeks

In this phase Ive dedicated 2 runs and 2 bike sessions per week. One is a long distance, aerobic workout and the other is a shorter interval anerobic workout

My plan was to keep this schedule into the tempo phase only really increasing the distances/HR in the long bike and run.

So . . . .

Am I "running in circles" so to speak by doing an aerobic workout and an anerobic workout in the same week?

thanks

Just for reference, my LT for the run is 170 and for the bike is 155

Youre base phase shouldnt really include AnE work. Speed drills and such are incorporated to get your legs adapted to speed, but the AnE stuff shouldnt start until the Build phase.

That said- just 2 of each? You should be doing three or four, even for the sprint distance.

Most of the half plans I see have double workouts. Most tri plans include 3 days of each sport. It is a necessary evil.

One could get through a Sprint with two workouts a week- but an Oly, much less a 70.3 needs quite the bit more preparation. If time is truely that limited for you, and seeing as the bike is your strong suit- at least do 3 soild runs a week.

Check out "Training Plans for Multisport Athletes" and Joe Friel's "The Triathletes Trainign Bible" Both are soild books. A lot of the online plans are just the schedules some dude out there follows.

Yeah for the HIM you have to be in the water at least 3 times, bike 3x and run 3x maybe miss one of those a week....

I'm in my second year of tri, done a few sprints, may move up to an olympic this year, and I'm shooting for 3 workouts/week in each discipline.

I did my first HIM last year (which was also my second year of racing) and I did a 3 of each discipline type workout. I think for a half you'll regret not having the mileage when it comes to race time if you only do 2 per week. If nothing else, I was always slightly tired/sore so it made my body learn to perform in that state which is a real boost in that long of a race. I used a plan from Matt Fitzgerald's book (complete triathlete training guide) and really liked it. I'm using another plan in it for an Oly this year and will hopefully improve my time as a result. Best of luck with the race and the training.

Totally agree with the advice above. 1) You should not have any anaerobic activity during base. during my first 12 weeks of base I almost never got into Zone 3 but maybe once a week. Also, for a HIM and especially during base, you need to be putting on the miles. I am following Joe Friel's HIM plan, more for intermediate to advance fitness levels, but I was doing 3-4 runs, 3 swims and 3-4 bikes a week. 2 a day's are a way of life for tri training as you need to build up good endurance and eventually speed in 3 sports versus 1.

thanks for the advice. Looks like I may be changing my base training a little to more workouts and less (if any) anerobic.

If time is tough would you get rid of the 2 strenght training sessions I have planned each week and insert the 3rd workout of a bike and run?

If time is that tight, yes. But continue to do some strength stuff- even if it is just a free squats, pushups, and dips for a 15 minute circuit a few days a week.

Hello JT- Just saw your thread and dont know if this is too late in your process, but I have done sprints for years and am gearing for HIM in August. I have been doing base training since December and never go anerobic and I dropped my two sessions of weights to accomadate extra workouts each week. I also did two workouts in each and moved that up to three in cycling and running. If you go exclusively aerobic (60-70%MHR) then you should be able to do more workouts and therefore increase your distance in each. Going anerobic during this phase can take a lot out of you. Hope this gives a different perspective from someone in same boat!
