Bike fit

Hi guys,
I am just starting out this year... I intended to get going last year but I had a shoulder injury. I would like to get through the season as inexpensively as possible. If I love doing this like I think I will then I won't mind blowing a wad of money on good equipment. I have everything now... except a bike.

I am looking for a used triathlon/ road bike for this season and I have found several that are in my range. Problem is I don't know what size bike to buy.

I know that I should go and get fitted and I will when I go buy a new bike if I decide to stick with this. In the meantime are there some general rules to follow.

I am 5'4" and in good shape. I would like to know what CM bike to purchase. I Googled " bike fitting" and it just confused me more.

Any help would be great...

It's hard to say just from your height - everybody's body is so different. For instance, I'm 5'7" but I ride the same frame size as my husband because my legs are so long. But I need a much shorter stem, because my back is so much shorter than his. In general, it would probably be helpful to go to a bike store and at least find out what frame size you should be looking at. You might find that you ride a different frame size in a tri bike than you would in a road bike, so make sure you ask about both.

If you get the correct frame size in a used bike, you can then play around with seat positions, stem positions, etc. to fine tune it. It's probably worthwhile to have someone at a bike store adjust it for you, even if you have to pay them to do so. You can be really uncomfortable and even cause injuries if you are not in the right position for your pedal stroke.
