I just had to share this because I know of no better way to thank my wife for this level of support. To make a long story short, we're stuck in traffic due to construction about 3/4 mile from the gym. At the rate traffic is going, we aren't going to make it in time for me to get my swim set in before the gym closes (she was planning to run some errands while I swam). She agreed to continue to sit in traffic while I litterally ran to the gym. I was in the pool already for 10 minutes before she made it past the construction and the traffic back-up. Never would've made it in time I hadn't gotten out or if she had not decided to come along. While it was too dark to notice, I'm sure a person running along an interstate feeder road in Houston probably generated some wierd looks and comments from those I passed. This just reinforces that most (if not all) of us would be in a decidely different place without those that support this crazy addiction.

Anyone else have any crazy stories about what their families/friends have been willing to endure for their pursuit of this sport?

No crazy stories, but much gratitude and appreciation to my wife and family for being so supportive. We couldn't really do this without it.

yeah, my family laughed at me when i said i was training for a triathlon. My brother insulted my swimming and said i'd never do it. my girlfriend finds my training annoying. She was quite happy to see a more muscular and toned boyfriend though and to tell her friends "my boyfriend does triathlons" though! My mother gives out to me for putting sweaty t-shirts in the wash basket all of the time and for constantly eating everything. Constantly told i'm mad for putting myself through so much. Waste of money apparently also.

very supportive altogether.

then again, they all just sit around watching tv all the time. i never watch tv. I have 40hrs of college, study, 20hrs part time work, and training when i can. tv's a waste of time.

go team.

That's a great story about the traffic. I don't have any crazy stories, but my husband and kids have always been great about going out and meeting me 80 or 100 miles down the road somewhere, bringing me food and making a day out of going someplace fun to meet me after a long ride. When they come to a race, they always make me smile. I know the long events like HIM and IM aren't a whole lot of fun to watch - lots of waiting time. Their favorite event was an Enduro Tri that I did: it's like 2 sprint tris back-to-back (swim bike run swim bike run). They got to cheer me through every 10 - 30 minutes or so, lots more entertaining that way!

The closest thing that I have is when my wife rode next to me on the mountain bike on one of my 22 mile runs. The thing is it was 50 degrees and cloudy for the first 3-4 miles then drizzle then rain. Miserable time but she stuck with me.

having the right support stafff in sooo needed, especially as the distances increase. My wife was so supportive last year as I struggled through my first year of racing. She wanted to be even more supportive this year, as I train for a HIM, so she started training for a sprint, trying to really get an understanding about why Im so passionate about it.

Its so easy for friends and family to dismiss your dreams and goals. The 4-5 people that you do have in your life that are truely supportive, hold on to them. They are very special people
