As luck would have it the construction company I own is doing a job where we have been demolishing a lot of steel lately. The last return netted me some cash that I have decided to convert into wheels. I am going to spend around $1,200, and still be able to give a couple bucks to the wife, and am looking at one of the following setups. (My main race next year is IMWI)

1. Hed Jet 60 front and Jet 90 rear.
2. Hed 3 trispoke front and back.
3 ZIPP 404's.

My local bike shop doesn't carry HED or ZIPP, so I don't really have any one to talk to that has much experience on these wheels. Any input would be appreciated!
Thanks

IF you are looking at getting new wheels, the Zipps are out because they are over your budget. I think the HED's (trispokes) are also closer to $1500 for a new set.

If you do want new wheels, the JET 60/90 is a great set. I've heard nothing but good things about them.

If used isn't a problem than it's a tough call, but I'd lean towards to H3's. They are totally bomb proof and they look rad. They're also pretty aero as well. Zipps obviously are good, but since everyone has them I'd say go with something different.

What about a disk??? Renn disk's go for about $450 new.

I just bought 2006 404s from ebay for $1100, the trick is to buy them seperately, and not as a set, and I am planning on adding a Renn disc to the set.

New is not a requisite, and I have been watching E-bay and could get some H3's or Zipps for that range. I could get Jets new however and I have been looking on slowtwitch and there's quite a few people over there who tout the new Jets.

Anymore I would tend to do the OPPOSITE of what you hear on Slowtwitch. That place is really going downhill which is too bad.

Good luck on whatever you purchase!

I have a set of HED-3's. They are great wheels. Also checkout the HED site - they also sell wheels with slight imperfections at a reduced cost. The wheels are still guaranteed but have some blemish or other.
I'll have mine at IMWI! See ya there!

Yes, there seems to be a lot of unruly people in their forums. It seems every post has 2-3 replies that serve no purpose.

I am leaning towards the Hed Jet setup and may add a Renn or other disc next year if it so allows.

Well after a lengthy call with Tim from Hed it looks like I'm ordering the Jet's. He recommended either the Jet setup, which he said will be a little more comfy than a pure carbon wheel or the H3C, which is a little priceer. All in all though it was a very informing conversation and am looking forward to my new wheels!! (I suppose I could forgo giving the wife some of the fun money and get the H3C's, but that may mean sleeping on the couch for a while!)

Good luck with the jets. Can you post a review on them after you have tried them? I rate the H3Cs. They are AWESOME!!!!!!

Unfortunately, unless they come with studded tires it may be a few weeks as I have about 3' of snow in my yard and lining my driveway right now. Will definitely post though once I get a ride on them and am looking forward to them.

Whenever somebody says that they want race wheels, I can't help but give a plug for Nimble (http://www.nimble.net). I have no affiliation with them except for customer, but they are awesome!

You can get Fly's for $900 and they are similar to zipp 303s except you get a choice of tubular or clincher and a custom spoke count for your weight and riding style or you can get Crosswinds for $1400 and those are trispokes. Their customer service is amazing too. I have a set of Fly's (and a set of Spiders) and they have been amazing for me.
