How balanced are you??
I'm not really balanced at all, and while I do try to concentrate on my weakness (running), I've come to accept that this is probably the way the sport goes for me. I'm usually the first woman out of the water, sometimes the first woman off of the bike too, and where I place really depends on who manages to catch up with me on the run. I'm trying to up my running miles this year and focus more on form, drills, speed work, etc., but I'm already seeing some nagging tiny almost-injuries, so I'm not sure how well that will work out.
I'm happy with where I'm at though - almost always placing in age group, often placing overall as well, every now and then I'm the overall 1st woman (more likely in races with longer bike or swim). Now if there was a great running coach out there who could somehow improve my running dramatically, I wouldn't turn it down, but that's where I'm at for now.

I'm also unbalanced!
Bike is my strongest. I focused a lot on my running and swimming this off-season to make them less of a limiter.
You are right that a strong bike is good, as it is the longest leg, but still need to be sure that you can continue to run off the bike.

My head hangs low in shame when I swim. I can't ever seem to do better then a 2:00 100m split last year. I just couldn't do it (then again I never really pushed the swim. I am a little faster this year so we shall see how it goes.
I am wickedly unbalanced.
Everything equals out though and I usually end up mid- pack.

My last Tri I did I was 16th on the swim, which was a bad swim for me, 18th on the bike (24.5mph avg over 15 miles) which was a little fast for me and 54th on the run, which was average for me (7:00 miles for 4 miles). Overall came in 18th out of 300. So the run really hurt me, but that was September and I'm getting better!

Uhhh, I think we all are a little imbalanced, if you know what I mean :D At least that's what my friends and family tell me....

Do you have access to a good swim coach or Master's group? Swimming is 90% technique, so a coach can make a much bigger difference than in any other sport. You might consider posting a video of your form here, like Pete L. did last month. I'm always willing to take a stab at it and I know there are some other experienced swimmers and coaches here too with great advice.

Great question! At the SOMA Half Ironman in October (about 1200 paticipants) I was 32nd out of the water, 20th at the end of the bike and finished 19th overall. Although I consider myself a runner, I do all my overtaking on the bike it seems. I had similar results at all my races last year.

Of course it's 'effing hard, it's IRONMAN!
I'm kind of the opposite of Ironmom - I get blown away on the swim and then spend the remainder of the race reeling people in. I've never been passed on the run, which speaks as much to my slow swimming as it does to my fast running. My last race had about 375 guys and I was 95th on the swim, 40th on the bike, and 5th on the run (18th overall).
That was almost a year ago. My swimming is much better now. At this point I feel weakest on the bike. I'm trying my best to address it though, and hopefully I'll be more balanced this time around.
Thanks to some great coaching so far this year (yeah, it's early, but I've had one race and I can feel it in training) I'm going to be getting a bit more even. But generally I'm strongest on the run, then the bike, then the swim. I can't wait to see how it plays out this year :)

I'm trying to make myself more even, my swim is way faster than my other legs. I think ill always be unhappy if im not first out of the water. My bike is respectable, but my run is pretty bad. I'm going to work alot on my running this season and see if it gets better.
I'm top 20 in age for swim, top 10 for bike and top 3 for run. My swim leg means I have to work hard. I usually end up around finishing where at the placing I get for my bike leg. Although my bike has and continues to imrove alot. Being a runner and having only been in the sport for 18 mths I still need to develop more power for the bike, another season or so should have me on track. The swimming is getting better, but its hard to give away that kind of time to the top guys in the age group.
I'm pretty similar to ironmom, just not quite as fast... For an average tri, i'll be top 10% out of the water top 15-20% off the bike and only top 40% on the run... Usually gets me a podium in the 20-24 age group and top 10 overall, but its not too much fun to be passed by so many people during the run, though it has been getting better. I used to be able to run sub 20 xc 5ks in high school, but then I would run 25-6 min off the bike. Finally, this past summer, I ran 21 min off the bike. My 10ks are another story though - I can't even break 50 and I haven't seen any improvement lately. I'll be working on this...
At IMWI 06 I was 2000'th out of the water out of 2800 - okay stop laughing! :) It was darn slow - but I was actually pretty happy about it. Moved up 900 spots on the bike and another 100 on the run to finsh about 1000'th overall. Suffice it to say lots of off-season work on the swim and run. We'll see how it pays off this year!

How balanced do you guys really feel across the disciplines? I just got back from pre riding and running the bike and run course for my first sprint of the year ( 3/10/2007). I went and compared my times to last years results and my ranking was almost dead on for each event (It's a pool swim so I'm confident I know what my time will be). What I mean is, my Swim, Bike and Run splits would have all been between 58th and 60th out of 350. I do see some folks with pretty strong bikes and blistering runs or the othger way around??
Makes me wonder where to focus my attention for the season? I'm thinking bike, as I have a history with it and its the longest leg....since I'm still in base, I should see what happens when I turn up the intensity in the next phases (and get through my HIM in May).
