Just out of curiousity do you guys run solo a lot? If you do what do you do to take your mind off of the run?

Unfortunately I run solo 95% of the time. This is because I don't know a single person in my family or have any people around me any more that do the kind of distance I do. Every now and then I get my brother up (when I am doing a recovery or slow run) but most of the time it's just J kickin it alone.

What I do when I run alone is listen to the iPod, but the funny thing (that I don't tell most people) is I love sing to it a lot while running. There are a few reasons I do this; one is to pass the time, and the other is to be able to talk when I get the chance to run with other people. Now I am not a super vocally talented guy when I am just jamming out on the couch on the bass. However, nothing compares to how I must sound when I am trying to run and sing at the same time. (I turn the volume all the way up so I can't hear my own voice :) ) I was running on a back country road a few weeks ago singing pretty loud to some Chevelle when a guy popped out from the woods about 20 feet away. He just kinda stared at me as I went past. The worst part is I had to turn around after about a half a mile and run by him again and get that "are you retarded" look coming back.

Well that was more of a confession then a question so does any one else have any good solo running stories I guess is my real question?

I run with a group only once a week. the rest of the time solo...always have...probably always will. I don't listen to music. I prefer to be attentive to what is going on around me. Most of my running is on trails right outside my front door (almost) and i'd miss alot of the natural world plugged into something.
No real good stories...the usual stuff...running into a bear (almost literally)...a couple answering love's call right in the middle of the trail...that sort of stuff.

I also go solo 95+% of the time when I run. On occassion my daughter will run with me when I am doing more of a recovery run. Also had my kids and wife ride their bikes along the path while I was out for a long run. Nice having access to water bottles and such! :D
Tho, when running, I pretty much try and just focus on the run. When I drift off to thinking about other things - it definitely impacts my pace. Tho thinking of things that were more upsetting caused me to run harder/faster. Hmmmm...
Since running is something that I am woking on to improve on, it is easier to stay focused on what I am trying to accomplish.

I run solo and prefer it most of the time. I wear my iPod most of the time but leave it at home when i hit the trails near my house so I cna hear the bears in woods or the cougars and bobcats following/stalking me. I tend to find myself air guitaring to certain tunes and occasionally singing syn: yelping. I don't get too many bad look but sometimes have to slow myself down as I pick up the pace quite significantly to some tunes.

I do 100% of my training solo now. I used to try and do long rides with friends on the weekend but found all I ended up with were garbage miles. It's not that my firends are so slow, it's just the specificity of how I train doesn't lend itself to staying in a group. I feel strongly that your benefit the most from training alon, J, so don't feel bad about being solo!
Having said that, I too sing on occasion while running with my iPod. People look at me like I'm nuts and I look back and think, "yeah, lets see you run this fast while singing! Oh snap! :)

I run solo almost 100% of the time. It's my time to let my mind wander and get away from life's demands. It's harder to do on the bike because I have to pay attention to traffic and it's even harder on the swim since I'm concetrating on not drowning. Plus, I get to talk to the 19 or so people who live in my head :)

They didn't have ipods or even walkmans when I started running so I guess I'm used to running without one. The only time I run with an ipod is when I have to use the dreamill but I never use it outside. I perfer to hear the sound of my feet hitting the ground and my breathing.

Solo 100% of the time. Partly, like you J I don't really know anyone up for the distance I run and for trainng I'm a little anal and need to hit certain HR levels, paces, etc. Running or riding for that matter with thers or groups makes it hard to manage my personal levels.

I listen to my ipod when I run. I just zone out and let the music carry me. I actually removed some mellow songs and added a few more hard driving songs -- my pace went up on my 2 hour+ runs ...hmmmmmm

95% of the time I run alone. I enjoy it. Most of my runs now are on off-road trails in the ice and snow. For whatever reason no one wants to run on stuff with me(?). I never listen to any kind of music. It seems to throw off my rhythm. I remember one time I was doing a 30 training run for an upcoming ultra and I completely zoned out for about an hour (I swore I fell asleep). I was doing this on a 2 mile loop. I freaked out when I came to because I had no idea what lap I was on! I guessed based on my total time.

3 mile swims in the pool have just about put me to sleep also. Maybe I'm narcoleptic.

I run solo almost all the time and I really love it. Then again, I'm an introvert (I really need to be alone to recharge) and I'm almost always with people (being a homeschooling mom), so I really value my training time as my alone time. My husband is 180 degrees from me, he hates to run alone, he's an extrovert who loves to be with others and it drives him bonkers to do long runs by himself, which probably explains why the only year he did a marathon is when he had a consistent training partner.

When by myself, I spend a fair amount of time just thinking, daydreaming, and watching the scenery (but I live in a place with lots of beautiful running trails - through wetlands, by the river, etc.) I use my iPod probably one or two runs of the week.

I'm almost always alone. I work a strange, inconsistent schedule, so it's impossible to find a partner. I never use an iPod unless I'm on the treadmill. I want to hear the cars, dogs, people, etc. coming up behind me.

I agree with Ironmom. It's a great time to be alone with me without having to pay attention to someone else's needs.

Well I haven't run since June, but way back then I used to run solo, all solo all the time. No music, just go.

A lot of times my mind just goes blank.

I've been known to sing. Silently or outloud, whichever.

The other times I'm trying not to get hit by cars that drive like crazy in densely populated SoCal.

I can relate on that. Some (censored word here) actually made me run off of the road and duck my shoulder as he buzzed me. Now this might have been quasi understandable except the road was flat and straight and a 25 mph speed limit which he was obeying. Further more then was no one else on the road. He was just being a complete (word censored again) that wanted to razz up one of dem city folk.

I prefer to run alone. Other people talk too much. I mostly run without music, but one the longer ones, I break out the tunes. I also find myself singing and dancing down the trail :D Who cares? I'm running to make me happy...Let them laugh, I say!

98.9 % of the time I run alone. For me running is my sanctuary, and is a very personal moment. When dad was around visiting me here and train for a few a couple of weeks for the Houston marathon, we did it together. But for me running particulary, helps me to get away of everyday stress, helps me to think clearer. I do run with music, from World music, to heavy metal, depending of the workout, the distance, the day, the weather, and so on. Sometimes my mind starts wondering around, sometimes the music carries me, like I am in some sort of a video or TV comercial, it is weird...and YES I do sing too, sometimes, like today, I was doing my long run, and I am sure a lot of people were thinking: "what is wrong with this guy???" singing, Ecuador by Sash:"VAMOS A BUSCAR LOS SONIDOS MAGICOS THE E C U A D O R"....weird...even the dogs, I bet, were thing just that....hahahahahaha
Running, is on top from the three disciplines, and is very personal, very intimate moment for me.
When I am in the zone, there are zero communications.....it is mee agains the floor...

I like running by myself... Occasionally I'll run with a friend, but only rarely. Everybody seems to run faster than I train. The only times I ever train faster than a 9+ minute mile are those specific workouts like strides, tempo runs, intervals, etc and those are usually too specific to do with a partner..

Odd Duck here- rarely run alone and run with a variety of people.
Typically, the weekend is the longer run with the friends training for marathons or a long tri, Monday March-Nov. is a standard 6 mi. run with people that raced on the weekend so we go slow and catch up on who did what, Tuesday April-Nov. is our running club run (2-6 miles) for people of all abilities and Thursday is our brick night for whoever shows and the beat goes on.

I run by myself 100% of the time, it's taken me a while to adjust but I love it. The only other person that I run with sometimes is my cousins wife, but I don't like running with her. I just have to have my ipod. I also sing to the songs, I catch myself starting to sing when I'm on the treadmill and feel weird, but then again, everyone next to me has on their mp3/ipod and can't hear me.

I enjoy my time alone when I work out, it gives me time to challenge myself and not say anything to anyone, I'm on the phone a lot a work.

90% of the time I run with my wife, the other half of the time(where did I see this?) I run with music. I am very lucky that my wife is also very into personal fitness (she's actually a personal trainer) and can run like a deer. I just can't get her on a bike or in the pool though. When alone, I listen to music, and yes, I SING TOO! Thought I was the only one. A couple of years ago for motivation I bought 2 Marine Corps Recon CD's where the drill sergeants are singing cadence. I can imagine what a nut I must've looked like running down the street, harking "Up in the morning with the rising sun, gonna run all day, till the running is done." But who cares! Lately I've been getting motivated by listening to the Gladiator soundtrack, and my old standby, 80's hair metal.

I had been running with a small group once a week, but that his kind of dwindled off as many in the group want to go faster and shorter than I do. Otherwise all of my training is solo. That one workout per week is a nice respite from all of the alone time, but it also reinforces why I do most of my training alone.

As for the music, I typically listen to music while running but will ditch it the last few weeks before a race to make sure I get some mental training in (more important for the longer races). When I run down the shoulder of the highway I do tend to try and wave at everyone as a motivator. About half wave back. What worries me about the other half is I don't know if they're anti-social or just not paying attention (scary thought).

I run with my wife BUT each of us at their own pace meaning I run with her for about 2 minutes and then we are alone.

If you are serius about your training plan you will have to run solo in order to obey the HR zones you should be running in every w.o.

I agree that in recovery runs and such it´s posible to find partners. But I don´t do it. It´s a space an time for me and me alone.

Would anyone agree with me if I said the iPod was the invention of this century so far?!

I do alot of my running by myself and have never really found it a problem. I think its because you only need to go for an hour tops on most occasions. Biking by yourself is alot harder 5-6 hours by yourself can become a real drag... let us say a little prayer of thanks... "Thankyou o' Apple INC, for gifting us triathletes with the 4GB iPod Nano"

I was in the Pentagon gym a few months ago over lunch and I caught myself singing (fairly loud too) to some music. I realized it when all of the Colonels were staring at my like who does this dumb kid think he is?

I enjoy running solo, although now I do run with a friend once a week. I really enjoy the quiet of an early morning run, especially on a Sunday when I might only see a car or two each hour. In two months I will be moving within a few miles of a state park and am looking forward to the peace and quiet of running the trails.

Ya, me too. Also, buying a house with 4 acres that backs right into a state forest. Lots of great trails. It will be nice getting off the roads more often. It is pretty heavily wooded - hope my Garmin will work well enough under that canopy. :)
