How long after the Ironman do you book another race?
J, everyone is different, and it depends on your training level and experience I imagine. Two years ago I did a HIM in May, an IM in July then another HIM in October....I was toast in that one and in a subsequent half-marathon! I hadn't let my body recover from the IM by running a few days after the IM. I won't do that this year. I'll hike the alps instead :D I'll see how my body recovers, and plan on another HIM in October, and if I'm not feeling up to it mentally or physically, I'll get in an Oly or half-marathon to finish the season.

I did a marathon a couple weeks after IMWI 2006. That really zapped me as I tried to run it for time. Shorter races shouldn't be too much of an issue. I am waiting this year to see how I feel after IMWI before committing to any races following.

I'm with RV...with the length of your races, it shouldn't be an problem....and it's two months from IMAZ to the 10k...
Did MCM in the fall, JFK 50 mile 3 weeks later and a month later did Goofy...no big deal, but I'm a distance pig.
As to your doing Fodderstack..well...there is a sprint distance race in Lake Placid the day after IMLP...It always gets folks jumping in who finished their IM less than 24 hours earlier...Go have fun!

Your body will for sure let you know.
That's fine if you are doing it for tradition, but be comfortable with a relaxed pace. I had signed up for a sprint tri before signing up for an IM, the sprint tri was 2 weeks after the IM. I didn't do a darn thing after my IM race excpet some sightseeing in Brazil that required some physical activity and when I got home nothing much but watching some tv after work. I wanted to do the race too see all my friends. I wanted to take it easy, I did on the swim, the bike felt good and strong and then on the run I just flew... I couldn't belive the energy I had with that 2 week taper. I was definetly tired the week after the race, maybe a mistake going a bit faster than I had planned, it's just that the adrenaline kicked in and I was off racing...
Definetly take some time off after your IM, that week between the 10k for sure and then after that, like I said your body will let you know for sure.

My experience was as follows:
Week 1 after IM - Felt like I had the flu the whole week, not too much soreness, just a really deep fatique.
Week 2 - Got back in the pool felt okay, but you will hit a wall like no other. Felt pretty good for the first miles of whatever I was doing and then completely caved in.
Week 3 - Feeling better, still not great endurance-wise.
Week 4 - was back out and felt like a ferrari, beating my friends on all the climbs and felt almost as strong as I did in Ironman. This feeling was also consistent with what I heard from other people, that 1 - 1 1/2 months out you will feel like you are in the best shape of your life.
That being said, I never raced again until two months later. I was ready (or at least felt like I was ready) to race earlier, but I hadn't signed up for anything as I wasn't sure how I was going to feel and the races had closed out.
Anyway, just ease back into it, and don't expect too much from yourself for the first three weeks, but don't sit on the couch and eat pizza (which really isn't in an Ironman's personality anyway) cause you don't want to start from square one when building base for the next IM you will inevitably want to do after you finish the first one. Good luck!

My friend has been trying to get me to run JFK this year. He talks a lot about it is it a good intro into ultra's?
Thanks every one I feel better about that 10k now I am just looking to finish not a sub 40 time trust me :)
Don't have experience yet, but you are in a similar boat to me (though I am only doing an HIM). May is my HIM then I turn it on for about 5 - 6 sprints and Olys. My thought is after a week of recovery, I'll slide back into training. My base will be SOOOOO good that I will spend the summer with some mantainence base miles and focus on speed. I'll probably cut down from 13+ hours per week to 9ish..... probably no help as I do not know what an IM does to you (2 yrs away for me as I need to negotiate the time and support from the "boss")
I've done 8 JFK's with a 9:24 PR...but I usually hit around 10:30 now...It's an easy 50 miler, the vast bulk of it being flat to rolling...aid stations are great and after the first 15 miles on the AT they come along pretty often...and...better bragging rights if you're into that...I mean it's NOT a 50K! (joke)

Ok I am looking this morning into what else I am gonna do as the year goes on after IM AZ. Now I know some of you are gonna be like "are you a moron" when I say I am doing a 10k the saturday following but I am only doing that out of a tradition that I want to keep alive. Anyways I am doing that race then I hit my 1 full month of recovery and slow and easy workouts. Then onto the sprint season again to get my speed back. This is what I have scheduled for this year
I might do the USMC Marathon again out of tradition as well on Oct 28th.
What do you think other then the Fodderstack :) Do you guys book your race before the big event. I was always told to do this so I don't get out of shape and I have something to work towards.
