Okay, here's the deal. I am taking a writing class in college and i have decided to write my next paper on why we do triathlons. I have a few of my own reasons but I want some other reasons from all of you. So the reflection question is, "Why do you train for/participate in/compete in triathlons?"

In advance, thank you so much for your help.

Why I train for Triathlons

The challenge,
the passion,
the pain,
the determination,
the competition,
the goal,
the achievment,
the mental aspect,
the start,
the finish,
the training,
to get in unbelievable shape,
for myself,
for my family,
for people that physically can't,
for everyone that said I couldn't.
I train for triathlons for LIFE.

1. to challenge myself (sorry to steal this one but it's true)
2. control my diabetes
3. keep me sane
4. to see hot tri babes run around in their underwear

proud and high or low and humble - many miles before I go

Everyone, everywhere, waits around their entire life to be part of something special.

We are part of something special. Something that very few people can understand.

Its what make us Triathletes, and the rest Spectators.

I train for Triathlons....

To get and stay in great shape (I lost 35 lbs. in the last 18 mos.)..
To meet the most positive, fun, awesome group of athletes..
To help myself stay as healthy as I can...(I had a heart transplant 5 years ago)
To do something that family and my doctors said I could probably never do..
To be the athlete I was never able to be while growing up...
To live every day with no regrets..
For the challenge..
To feel great after a workout or a race, no matter how I place..
For fun..

And finally, I train for triathlons to relax... especially after working in an office all day...

Good luck on your paper......

I wrote my 'why do I do it' post a while ago. Here is a quote:

"Sometimes I wonder why I bother swimming and running and cycling and entering organized events when I am such a no talent slow poke. I can only compete against myself because I just don't have the athletic prowess needed to be a competitive Age Grouper. It just isn't going to happen and so I often wonder why make the effort at all?

I do it so I'm not just another middle-aged Moms jean wearing, barrel shaped, matron, unable to climb a flight of stairs without getting winded. I do it so that today, tomorrow and when I'm 90 I can still be experiencing my vitality, not my decrepitude. I do it because not doing it feels like giving in. I do it to set achievable goals and then bask in self-satisfaction when I succeed. I do it to learn to appreciate my effort whether or not I meet my goals and to learn to stop trashing myself when I don't. I do it to get high on myself and so I can eat pizza once in a while without freaking out about it. I do it so I can work on getting better, not older."

I train and participate in triathlons because:

I love the lifestyle.

The challenge of attempting to go 140.6 miles is something I cannot and don't want to get out of my mind. It has been there for over 5 years and this is the first time I am acting on it because this is the first time I have the confidence to attempt it.

None of the athletic pursuits I have been a part of in my 37 years of life has been as rewarding and made me feel so alive.

And as always, to be a role model for my children and students.

Good luck with your paper.

I do IMs cause I CAN. Be happy that you have the capability to do anything physical if you can do it. Never take your body for granted.

To set a positive example, so that my son doesn't wakeup when he's 30 and realize he needs to lose 50 pounds.

Because all my coworkers think I'm insane, and that' just fine.
(Actually a lot think I'm nuts for walking to the second floor office, rather than taking the elevator.)

Because my father is still faster on a bike than I am.

work = accomplishment = reward

A working stiff does his 40 hours to no tangible point and there are few rewards of accomplishment or achievement that the stiff can forever be proud. A familiar refrain for most.

Triathlon evens the field. You put in the work(training), do well at the race, and are rewarded by that feeling of accomplishment. You don't have to win, place or show only know that you focused on a task and there were good results.

For me its the opportunity to push myself. There are few persuits outside of athletics that allow you to push your mind and body to the limit.

I do it for the last 2 minutes of any race, when I have the finish line in sight. I know then that the long, hard and often gruelling hours of training have paid off.

I know then that I have met the challenge and have had the tenacity to stick with it.

I do it to make a better me for myself and hopefully for those that share my life. I do it to cross that finish line.

Yeh baby, the tri life for me!

You are a better man than I!

Decrepitude means breaking down - going to decay. I am avoiding that in spite of my advanced age (52)
