So typical of a parent with small children, I am getting one of my kid’s colds. I am actually shocked that the whole family has made it this far without getting sick. Here's me question: I had read somewhere that if the symptoms were above the neck, that you should really just do what you feel like you can do. If the symptoms were below the neck, NO TRAINING. So what do you guys and gals tend to do? This is my final base week before an R&R week. I will then be moving to a 12 week Build and Peak phase for my HIM on May 5th. I have a 2 hour run tomorrow and a 3 hour bike on Sunday scheduled....

that's what I've always heard. above the neck - good to go. below neck - take a rest.

as a side I take echinecea to help the cold go away quicker no hard evidence behind it but it works for me. hope you feel better.

proud and high or low and humble - many miles before I go

As soon as I start to feel a scratchy throat coming on, I start taking Cold-Eeze. Maybe its all in my head (knock on wood) but most times I take it, I don't end up getting sick. And on those occasions that I do, the cold symptoms aren't so bad and they are shorter-lived. Give it a try!

Honestly you'll recover faster the easier you take your training. Your body only has a limited amount of energy available to keep itself running. Fighting off a cold takes a considerable amount of energy and if you use up a lot of energy working out it'll be harder to kick the infection. If you switch your rest week to this week to recover and do this week's training next week you won't mess up your training. This far out from a race you're not concerned with timing your day-to-day training with the race. The day-to-day timing right now is just to keep from getting hurt and to maximize training benefit. Just get the benefit next week when you're healthy.

Also, when I'm sick I completely lay off alcohol and take vitamin C a couple times a day in addition to easing up on the training. I use Emergen-C, but I've found that Airborne works just as well.

A rhinovirus runs it's course in 7 days. Period. There is alot of stuff out there to help mitagate the symptoms ...but it won't go completely away...
Good luck!

Hi solidad, Im down with a cold too and although it is a head cold, I would still take it easy.

Yesterday I trained - just a 45 minute ride - and found it made it worse. Today Im still feeling pretty crummy so I might just do some weights and a light 20-30 minute run.

If youve done the hard work, a couple of days rest wont hurt you.

I took it easy for a day or 2 and decided to go with the "how I feel test". I actually had a great 15 mile run on Saturday and a great 56 mile bike on Sunday .... Just taking it easy on Friday was great. Now I am able to have a great recovery week with out also battling a cold. gets me jazzed for next week when I start the build phase for my HIM.
