Vineman 70.3
did it way back in '01 my first half IM. loved it. and if I could get it closer to Philly I'd do it again. river swim out and back easy current on the way back usually wetsuit friendly, ride was great rolling hills of wine country - very scenic. Chalk hill is a bear but not impossible. the run was rolling hills one or two little nasty ones but no impossible. also very scenic. volunteers were awesome! (one was even nice enough to offer to shoot me when I was cramping up on the run :) ) excellent race definitely train for hills
also the day after we hit the spa's in a nearby town (might be comstock) the massages were refreshing but I could skip the mudbath.
proud and high or low and humble - many miles before I go

Hey I'll be there racing it, too :) It will be fun to meet more trifuelers!
As for the course, I did the full Vineman there last year. It uses the same bike course (plus a little connector to get back on the first part and then a second loop) and the same first part of the run course (it's 3 laps where the 1/2 is one). It was a great course, and we actually had perfect weather for the day.
The bike is a nice course. I'd call it rolly -- like was said there is chalk hill, but it isn't crazy. It's mostly on small backroads but the pavement is decent. Some parts that were pretty bad were redone last year.
I'm also from the Sonoma area, so it's nice to be back there sometimes.

I and some Navy buddies will be doing this this year as well. To be honest - I think my wife had more than 50% vote on this one... funny how much more accepting she is of my training when she realized that the races can be turned into vacations at places she wants to visit! Anyway - curious what you CA types call "rollers" ... +/- how many feet? Here on the gulf coast of Texas the only "rollers" we have are overpasses (maybe 30 ft) and the only "hill" within about 15 miles is a large bridge and it's only maybe 100 ft tall. I think my legs are going to be toast.
It will be the first 56 miles of this elevation profile (that's based on my GPS from the full)
