Had a problem with my right knee about 4 weeks back. Same type pain as the IT band problem I had from a couple years back, just different leg. Decided not to run for 4 weeks, opting for the elliptical instead. Tried to run yesterday and didn't make it 1.5 miles before the pain set back in. Went to sports med Doc today and now I am scheduled for MRI on Mon for possible meniscus tear. Really hoping it's just a tight IT band but now I'm really frustrated. I'm supposed to be enjoying my base training for IMKY right now. Doc says go ahead and ride /swim until the MRI as long as it doesen't bring on pain. Sorry, just needed to vent!

OHHH that is not good Sorry:(
If it is any consolation--meniscus is probably the "best" of the things you can tear. They can often just go in and shave off the flap of cartilidge that is torn--better (if you can say that) then tearing a ACL or MCL.

Oh yeah, over the past 4 hours I've become an "expert" on meniscus tears and repair procedures. But I'm gonna try and stay positive and hope for the best.

As the owner of a really bad pair of knees (five knee surgeries), I need to chime in. As britta said, a meniscus tear is probably the "best" part you can tear. After my meniscus tear surgery, I was only on crutches for one day, swimming, water running and riding an exercise bike as soon as the stitches were taken out (about a week after surgery) and running in three weeks. So stay positive, you'll be back in no time and you still have lots of time before IMKY. One more thing - ice is your friend - ice you knee after every workout for two or three months. Good luck!

Thanks watrbg2, I needed to hear that. Some of the stuff I've read on recovery time seemed too long for me to be off. I know it's all in how aggressive the doctor, therapist, and patient want to be. And being that I sign up for endurance events and such because I enjoy the pain and suffering, hopefully I can use that to my advantage. Oh well, still hoping for negative MRI. Thanks for the reply.

Recovery time depends on how large the tear is and where the tear is located on the meniscus so recovery time will vary. Even if it is a torn meniscus, at least you'll know what is causing the pain and it can be fixed relativley quickely. Let us know the MRI results.

That's good to hear. Do what needs to be done to heal it up, so you are there to toe the line for IMKY.
