Ladies- tri shorts that fit?

This is my story...

So I ordered a new pair of tri-shorts. Last summer, I got some briefs and a singlet from TYR which I really liked despite the fact that I was a bit self-conscious about how huge my thighs looked in the briefs. It was an improvement over the grey Zoot shorts I had, which in addition to having no appreciable padding whatsoever, made my thighs look like sausages about to explode out of their casings. The added benefit of the briefs from TYR was that they had a decadent amount of padding in them that my bum really apprecated and was not bothersome whatsoever. Because of this good experience, I (mistakenly) thought that I might find the modesty I desired with the padding that my bummed craved in the TYR tri shorts.
No so! I tried them on this morning and the fit was all wrong. The shorts overall felt a bit loose while the silicone leg grippers were overly tight, leading to exploding-sausage-casing syndrome yet again. And the padding, what happened to the luxuriant pad I was expecting? It must have disappeared in the shipping! What, oh what do I do now? Do I return them? Perhaps I should try them on again a bit later, after all, I did try them after I had just weighed myself and found I had gained weight despite effort to the contrary. Will I ever find a pair of shorts that don't induce exploding-sausage-casing syndrome? Is it time to start considering lipo???

ANyone else have similar problem? ANyone have any suggestions?

I have success with the Pearl Izumi tri shorts. Also... um... I think they are sugoi (club kit).

I don't know about the difference in their briefs and shorts, but in my experience tri shorts have very minimal padding, and once used to it my rear is ok with that.

I would try to return or exchange the ones you got if that is an option. There are no places near you that carry a few brands so that you can try them on?

I have some Pearl Izumi's and Zoots, they both are minimal in the padding department. Most are from my experience--they have to be so you don't get "we diaper butt" on the swim. Invest in a good bike saddle and work your way up in the time on the bike.

I know some people in IM distances throw bike shorts on for the ride, but I train all my long rides in my tri shorts so I get used to it. If the shorts you have dont fit, then return them if you can. In my opinion none of them look great any way. No one is going to pay attention, we will all be wearing the same hideous shorts

Desoto tri shorts don't have the silicone super strength gripping super tight leg grippers that bothered you. I have big legs too and I know exactly what you are talking about. The pad is minimal though, because they are tri shorts. I use bike shorts for training and tough it out with tri shorts for racing. I'm so hyped up in a race I really don't notice the difference all that much anyway. Also, there is a company called runningfunky.com that will custom make shorts for you. Just remember to ask for the heavyweight spandex. I just ordered my second pair of shorts from them and am very happy with their work. They will custom make the size of the leg openings, add extra padding, whatever you want. Good luck.

If you have any kind of local bike or tri store, I would go in and tri :) them on. I've found that they all fit so differently and that even within the same brand or the same pair of shorts, if they factory changed out to a different brand of elastic or something they can fit totally differently.

For training, my favorites are Pearl Izumi cycling shorts, not the ultra-long or ultra-short kind, just the mediums. I've had one pair my dad got me at least 11 years ago and they're still going strong, they seem to have very good durability.

For racing, I wear a tri suit in shorter races, and in longer races I have a pair of Orca tri shorts. They're shorter than biking shorts, have a slightly lower waist and very little padding. I've found that less padding does not equal less comfort and more does not necessarily mean more comfortable. I think it all depends on the shorts, the pad, where its placed, etc. I did quite a few long (100+) mile rides in my tri shorts and was pretty comfortable in them.

I have to agress with Ironmom. I have several different pairs and when I find a pair I love, I'll order another pair, but for some reason they sometimes fit differently. Anyway, keep trying different brands/styles and you'll eventually find ones you love too. Also try some women specific companies like She Beest and Terry.

Good luck - Ant
