Here I am back from a year overseas and ready to have a good year. My wife got me signed up for IMFL and I was set to kick the year off with the Music City Marathon along with a few shorter races this summer. I've been planning this season for over a year...

Last Monday I ran and lifted upper body w/ some core work. Tuesday I ran and my back was tight so I ran easy. Wednesday I swam and Thrusday was my brick, after getting off the bike I ran less then a 1/4 mile and turned around. I had pain in my knee and it was super cold and I was in short sleeves and shorts. I took the weekend off because knee hurt and we had alot of stuff going on. I popped motrin and iced and felt better for my monday run. I got no more then 100m and went straight to the medics who sent me straight to the docs. They are pretty sure I tore my MCL(pending an MRI). This is the same knee I tore 3 ligaments on in '99. So now I dread another surgery and another missed year.

Thanks for letting me vent.

That is rough. Hopefully it is not as bad as it is thought.

Sometimes you have to get those things out in the open. It's a shame but the body can heal.

Take care Rob.

A little update and a question for the medical types out there. I'm still waiting for my MRI to get read, but I have seen 2 different docs. The first told me that I had arthritis and to stop running. The second said I had a knee cap/cartliage problem, to stop running and there was nothing they could do.
I just find it hard to believe there is no treatment to help me. I considering a 3rd opinion cause really neither of these guys has given me 1 piece of advice or offered a remedy as to how I can recover or get better.

Is there really nothing that can be done?

I have no idea in your particular case, but I it seems more commone for a general practitioner to say something like that. Try to see a sports med doc, particularly one that is a runner or triathlete or works with a number of them. Find out from local running clubs, etc who they recommend.

I agree with kyillee - A sports Med Dr. comes at it from an athletes point of view. They also seem to be open to alternatives rather than the quick easy diagnosis. The last time I went in - the first words out of my Dr's mouth once he figured out the issue was how to alter my training as I healed to keep me moving. Of course each situation is different - but another viewpoint may be a good thing.
