I've heard 2nd metatarsal as the normal for TT'ers and folks who are going for slower rpm's. Moving the cleat back does help in using the quads more, but I have no clue how moving the cleat to my arch would affect my pedal stroke......

Super interesting! Some bikies I know have talked about this for years, but noone ever tried it...
I have some old shoes...I think I will...noodle around a bit and see how it feels...

On Joe Friel’s new blog he talks about moving your cleat back as far as the arch of your foot. He claims no scientific evidence to placing at the ball of your foot. He claims that it allows the quads to do more work as you are not transferring power through the weaker calf muscle and also saves the calfs for the run…. Seems to make some sense. Any thoughts out there? The only thing I can think to challenge this would be that to gain power from 12 o’clock to 3’ o’clock on the pedal stroke, you need to be able to drop your heel some to get the force. Also, there is the physics explanation of force time lever arm length. If you move the cleat back you are shortening the “lever”…
Anyway, thought it was kind of interesting….
