There is dedication and then there is boarderline crazy.

We are at -15 today with a windchill of -35. Saw a guy out on a bike doing his commute.
This is dangerous cold. I know a lot of you guys commute - but where do you draw the line?

That is just insane... That goes from being brave to actually being unhealthy. My borderline is 35 degrees.

as long as the road surface is good enough to ride, I ride...thankfully i don't have to worry about super low temps here...

I raced bikes for a few years when I lived in Michigan. I'd get out in some rpettyn cold stuff, but never really the negatives. I actually had 2 waterbottles freeze and ended up very dehydrated once on a long ride. I live in NC now, and unless there is something falling fromthe sky, I can ride...

I bet it was BBB... just getting in a long loop through Milwaukee area on his way to work in the BC area

Honestly, when commuting, I was always more careful in bad weather (which is usually just some rain here). Drivers in this area are even worse in rain, so it wasn't always worth the risk or hassle of drying clothes at work.

Hmmmm....
Cold, as long as you're dressed for it, shouldn't be a problem. Road conditions with bad drivers, that's where I usually draw the line. People with cell phones, on packed snow, trying to read the newspaper, all while driving, seems like a good time to take the bus or another form of transportation. OR, if you can, work from home.

With child number 2 on the way, I'm getting more conservative on my ride choices. Lightning, Ice Storms, and Flooding all seem like good times to stay in side. Unless your house is being flooded... then kayaking seems like the best choice.

He's not crazy, just dedicated! Yes, I agree if the roads are clean, I'd do it too. Just dress warm. For me it's a lifestyle. Way to go dude! :D

I'm with TDB...bundle up and go!...however, I too am cautious about road conditions and inattentive drivers...
better on the trainer in bad conditions than out
BUT...there are those in our society who don't have the means to or ability to own a car and use bikes to get around....For them there is no line in bad weather...no work= no pay.

I draw the line at road conditions too. We've had some hard frosty nights here recently and a friend of mine went down hard when he came upon a big sheet of black ice from someone's busted garden hose. He ended up in the hospital. If it's icy on the road surfaces, I don't ride. Anything else I am usually game for. Sometimes we'll get big windy rainy storms and I've been caught off guard by those. This year I almost got blown off my bicycle when I caught a big gust between two buildings. Usually, I just try to be safe and if it seems unsafe then I will drive or take the bus.

I'll run in this - but was concerned with the fingers stiffening up making it unsafe to break or shift. I have a nice pair of winter biking gloves but still the fingers get cold.

best thing is to get a pair of large leather wooly (interior) gloves. I ride with these in minus temps:

Being a South Floridian, I draw the line at 60 degrees. Did you see that foul weather at the Super Bowl last night? I'm in hibernation till we get back to normal here. But seriously, biking in the cold sucks, but I remember my college days in New Hampshire jogging in snowstorms. It was fun, like running on a cloud, or maybe I was just young and stupid. If you are dressed right though, it's awesome. I even climbed a mountain in February (again, young and stupid.) The problem is, I don't own any winter clothing anymore. But I have a wetsuit and a new Speed Racer cycling jersey!!

My rule of thumb--if you have to scrape the car windows, there is probably ice. Its not the cold but the icy patches that can get you. It is not worth risking getting hurt (hubby slid across a bridge on ice last winter and broke his arm) and being out good training time. Fortunately here it does not get that cold often
