Pedals
I use Look Keo right now...have used lollypops (speedplay) too and like both. +/- foe both. Speedplay has good float but dirt and stuff can get stuck in the spring in the shoe cleat. Look doesn't have as much float, but provides a bigger platform, which I think reduces pressure on the bottom of the foot.(for me anyway)

I've heard of people jumping out of Looks, but that was on sprints in crits and road races, so you're looking at upwards of 1000 W. If you plan on only doing non-drafting tris, that shouldn't be a problem since you probably won't ever put out more than say 400 W or so.
Speedplay are well known for being extremely positive, but be careful if you're not doing flying mounts, since the cleats on them are bulkier than others, making tripping in transition more of a possibility.
I really like Shimano SPD. I like the wide platform, and I've never pulled out of them accidentally (which has happened with other cleats under high power....not safe). They are very positive while riding, and the wide, flat cleats make them easy to walk around in.

Not fast enough.
I use Look Keo Sprints and really like them.

I ride Shimano SPD- SLs. You can get the Dura Ace pedals new off ebay for $150 or less. I have the lowest end pedals, the R540s? and theyve worked great for the past year. Theyre made of metal, so theyre not gonna crack like Look's lower end pedals. I havent managed to pull out of em, even when theyre at the lightest setting.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
Thanks for all the info. I probably wouldn't even considered SPDs, but will now. I'll be getting a bike fit and obviously will need to upgrade my pedals/shoes prior.

Theres a big difference between the SPD MTB pedal and the SPD-SL roadie stuff. Just to clarify that.

I ride the Speedplay lollipop pedals and really like them. They take a bit of getting used to, esp. on hills, but I like that I have never had any knee pain since I switched over to them, they give enough float that you can get in just the right position. Of course, a downside is that they give you enough float to get in terrible pedaling positions too, so you have to be pro-active about having good form.

Get the Quattro's instead of the plain ole eggbeaters. I had looks for 2 seasons and almost broke my ankle from clipping out while climbing, damn that hurt. And yes the tension was almost at it's peak. I love the quattros, impossible to clip out while climbing b/c of how they are designed.

Oh yeah....definitely. I thought I'd save some money last year and get the MTB pedal (poor college student....lack of options). I rode them for only a few months before I torqued the crap out of them doing sprints in group rides and climbing. After that I was clipping out randomly on flats from time to time....not fun! I've put a few thousand miles on some SPD-SLs since (just 105s, too!) and I've loved 'em...not mention smoked some roadies (always fun when some guy just calls you "hey, triathlete" for the whole ride and you smoke him like Cheech Marin on a city-limit sprint)

I have Shimano Ultegra pedals.....great platform, and love them more than my SPD's. The platform takes some getting used to, but they are great. :D No problems, whatsoever.

"Its an addiction"
Ended up w/Keo Carbon and aside from some funky directions, am completely satisfied.

good call. That is a nice pedal - you can't go wrong with it.
Another SPD-SL devotee here. I've got a pair of R540s (think 105 level) on my road bike, and ultegra on the tri bike. Easy to clip in and out, good quality construction, and comfortable.
Ebay is a good source, or try probikekit.com if you don't mind getting something shipped from the U.K. (They have had free shipping in the past and prices are as good or better than ebay).

Eggbeaters rule for offroad riding, but for road/street situations I've found that they lack precision and tend to 'squish' around a lot. They do have a lot of float, but there's just too much play in them, so I'm looking into scoring a new set. Not sure where to start and am looking for recommendations.
