For the bike:
I tend to put an extra waterbottle or 2 of whatever my favorite drink mix is. Then I can just add water at an aid station. I also throw in a few favorite gels and sometimes other little food treats. I also tend to include a few CO2s and a tube or 2, just in case I have gotten a flat and want to have one still with me in case it happens again.

For AZ I decided not to put the gels in at the last second, forgot, stopped just for them, and was then sad since I didn't really want anything else. I didn't even bother to stop for the bag at Vineman.

For the run:
For AZ I put in a light long sleeved shirt based on some suggestions for when it's getting to be night, as well as a gel I like (since I didn't plan to carry any of my favorites with me). I ended up being done much earlier than predicted and the temperature being fine, so I never stopped for the bag in AZ. Vineman I didn't even bother to have a run bag, and I probably won't bother again this year unless the weather is suspect.

Not much once I read the fine print that said that I may not get my stuff back at the end of the race. On the bike I put my second 1/2 of bike leg food. On the run I put a long sleeve shirt, a pair of dry socks, and some hammergels in the bag. At 1/2 of the run I grabbed my bag and gave it to a friend in the crowd so that I'd get my stuff back.

At IM Wisconsin this year they took everyone's unclaimed bags and laid them out on the lawn on Monday morning. They were unsecured and all over the place. Anyone could have scavaged through them. Pretty lame if you ask me.

The moral of the story is don't put anything in that you'll miss if you don't get it back.

Ya, no gaurantee that you will get it back - And at IMWI the issue was that the cardboard boxes that they transport the bags in got trashed by all the rain. So it was a mess finding things. And a lot of people did not tie their bags when passing them back, so things were dumped out all over. There were some nice things in that pile.
I actually did get all of my things back. I will certainly put less in them this year.
The first time tho, I had them loaded up pretty good.

Oh...add patience, humility and some mental toughness. You will need it.

If you wear contacts, an extra pair of contacts is a good addition to the swim-to-bike bag - just in case your googles are knocked off during the swim and you lose a contact. 112 miles is a long way to bike half-blind.

The single best thing I'm glad I included in my special needs bag was ibuprofen. That saved my Ironman, given that I had a dislocated toe from the swim on and it was swelling up and hurt like a #$!%!. I wish I'd put some in my run special needs bag too, next time I will (just in case, though I hope not to have to use it again).

Other stuff:

Bike special needs bag:

spare tubes
CO2 cartridges
gels
Cliffbar
ibuprofen
ziploc baggie with drink mix (I dumped this into my Neverreach and filled it with water, it was the only time I had to refill anything)
cheap spare sunglasses (I can't go out in the sun without them)

Run special needs bag:

gels
Glide
clean dry socks
blister shields
Enduralytes
Sport Beans (jellybeans)
Long sleeved shirt

I hope it gives you wings... I couldn't image drinking that while racing, don't you have a bit of a downer afterwards?
