The Carnacs are dead! Shopping for new bike shoes.I liked the Carnacs but shoes have changed in the last 5 years since I bought these.
What do you guys like and why?

Are those a tri shoe or a road one?

I'd also be interested in what tri shoes people like as the road shoes might be replaced this year for me.

They were a Tri shoe..one big strap, lots of ventilation, obnoxious yellow color...
Doesn't have to be a tri specific shoe road is fine too.

I love these:

These are tri shoes - designed by Peter Reid. Great airflow, carbon sole - great support. I've had them for one season and are very happy with them.

Thanks RV! Looks like that one even has a women's version and one of my local bike shops carries it. I'll have to go check them out.

Curious... one of the things said for the shoe is that the ease of on and off is one of the biggest benefits. For an IM, how much do you guys care about on/off ease?

For IM? Ya don't. Both my past IM's and the third coming up this summer make it quite clear you cannot put your shoes on the bike pre race and can't leave them there after the ride...everyone doing the Fred and Ginger tap routine to the changeing tent.
For short races...no problem.

Right, I know most IM-brand races don't allow you to leave your shoes on the bike (unless you are a pro). Non-mdot I have seen it allowed for everyone. I guess it would matter how competative you are though :)

I have only been cycling for a year and I have Vittoria road shoes and I like them. Is there another major benefit to tri shoes besides the ease and quickness of taking them off and putting them on?

Really? I knew about not having the shoes on the bike to start - but I don't recall seeing anything about not leaving your shoes on the bike going into T2. I left them on at IMWI - will check closer for this year.

They typically have more ventilation so they are cooler with or without socks. I like the Shimano Tri shoes as they have the same stiff carbon sole as the top of the line race shoe. Have not tried them on yet, but I have my eye on them.

RV you are so right....I have fallen on my own petard (go ahead...look it up.) Not on to start...but I can't find, nor can I remember where it says definately that you have to leave them on at the end of the bike leg... Corrected till otherwise noted.

The Specialized Tri Vents always get great wraps. I have tried a set breifly, but didn't purchase yet. Will do soon. They seem to be the shoe of choice at the moment.

Another vote for the Trivent. I love Specialized's fit, and even owned the 2006 S-Works shoe (with the BOA lacing system), but went to the Trivents for their better tri pedigree. I now own two pairs of trivents: one for the road bike, one for the gym (different pedal systems, ya see).

I really like the nike tri shoes because they have a very stiff carbon sole and great ventilation. Quick to get in and out of too.

I have tried the Nike, Specialized, and Shimano shoes.

I own the Shimanos, but really only because the shop couldnt find a pair of 47s. I tried on a pair of 46 and 48, and they worked and felt good, but I needed the 47s for a good fit.

I thought the Nikes were a PITA to get in. The Shimano and Specialized shoes opened MUCH wider than the Nikes and both offered better ventilation.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
